The Winter Men, by Brett Lewis

In the modern, post-collapse Soviet Union, criminal gangs rule under the aegis of a crumbled government, and old soldiers roam the streets...as do old superheroes. One such man is Kris Kalenov, a former member of the Russian elite military force 'Red 11', now a Moscow policeman. Caught up in a kidnapping case, Kalenov encounters the dark heart of the New Russia at every turn, bringing him into conflict and allegiance with friends and enemies alike as he searches for both a missing girl, and the secret of the Soviet super-project codenamed 'Winter'. Author Brett Lewis and artist John Paul Leon ("Static") present a tour-de-force graphic novel soaked in vodka, blood and sweat. Warning: This title is for adults only!

From Booklist
Lewis and Leon postulate that the Soviet Union developed a supersoldier before it imploded—just one, which was abetted with special forces individually encased in “rocket-tanks”; the “tankmen,” it’s hinted, were biotechnologically enhanced, too. The supersoldier disappeared, but five former tankmen remain. Kris Kalenov, now one of Moscow’s finest, gets specially assigned by the mayor when a little girl with a transplanted liver is kidnapped. The organ confers some supercapabilities on the child, including being able, when grown, to bear a supersoldier, thereby launching a new race. Kris contacts fellow ex-tankmen Drost, an army “rapid reaction corps” commander; disarmingly gorgeous bodyguard Nina; and Nikki, a gangster, and the game’s afoot. Played out in the context of “Mafiya” gang warfare and ex–secret police faction-fighting, it’s graveyard-humorous, lethally tough, and curiously sluggish; its best sequence is an interlude in which Kris takes Nikki along for a day of ordinary police work just for, uh, laughs. Leon’s glorious, mercurial comics-realist artwork almost completely compensates for the script’s lack of zest. --Ray Olson

Absoluteley astounding piece of work
By BookWhore
Buy this book now! Seriously. This is one of the greatest stories that I have ever read. In any genre. In any medium. And I have read thousands. This is simply amazing. Seriously I don't even know where to begin. I guess to oversimplify it I would call it a Russian version of Watchmen. Every line drips with poetry. Every page has striking imagery. Every character is a real person, complex and layered just like the story. These are master storytellers going at full throttle and without compromise. Be warned, this is not for little kids. It is dark, complex, filled with social commentary, black humor, lots of sex and violence, and not for one instant does any of it feel forced or done for shock value. These creators are trying to give you a glimpse of a modern Russia where gangsters, politicians, cops, intelligence officers, soldiers, mercenaries, and businessmen are all but indistinguishable from each other in there never ending cutthroat battles and manipulations for power. Strategies. Alliances. Betrayals. Conspiracies within conspiracies are the norm here. And caught in the middle is Kris. A former soldier who starts off trying to solve a kidnapping case and quickly gets sucked into much larger schemes that include everything from new Russian Mafya to secret government super soldier programs. The paranoia never stops and the killing never slows. This is a dark and dangerous world they have created and the truly disturbing part is how much like our own it resembles. It is a masterpiece.

More than a comic book
By Mark J. Chiarello
I have never had any particular interest in the comic book as an art form, but this completely changed my perspective. On a recommendation I acquired the soft bound compilation of the whole series. Read as a whole it is an absorbing story. I was astounded by Lewis's ability to convey a rich and nuanced narrative in so few words. You owe it to yourself to experience this gritty post-Soviet haiku.

As someone without a lot of experience with graphic novels I have to say The Winter Men is proof that I've been missing out. The writing is action packed, funny and above all else smart. The art really brings the reader to a whole new level of interaction with the plot. I was blown away and will be looking for more from this genre. Keep em coming.

Almost French: Love and a New Life in Paris, by Sarah Turnbull

The charming true story of a spirited young woman who finds adventure--and the love of her life--in Paris.

"This isn't like me. I'm not the sort of girl who crosses continents to meet up with a man she hardly knows. Paris hadn't even been part of my travel plan..."

A delightful, fresh twist on the travel memoir, Almost French takes us on a tour that is fraught with culture clashes but rife with deadpan humor. Sarah Turnbull's stint in Paris was only supposed to last a week. Chance had brought Sarah and Frdric together in Bucharest, and on impulse she decided to take him up on his offer to visit him in the world's most romantic city. Sacrificing Vegemite for vichyssoise, the feisty Sydney journalist does her best to fit in, although her conversation, her laugh, and even her wardrobe advertise her foreigner status. But as she navigates the highs and lows of this strange new world, from life in a bustling quatier and surviving Parisian dinner parties to covering the haute couture fashion shows and discovering the hard way the paradoxes of France today, little by little Sarah falls under its spell: maddening, mysterious, and charged with that French specialty-sduction.

An entertaining tale of being a fish out of water, Almost French is an enthralling read as Sarah Turnbull leads us on a magical tour of this seductive place-and culture-that has captured her heart

From Publishers Weekly
A bestseller in Turnbull's native Australia, this cute firsthand look at the hardships of settling into a city infamously chilly to outsiders gives a glimpse of the true nature of Parisians and daily life in their gorgeous city. Though Turnbull tells readers less about love than new life, it was in falling for a Frenchman that the journalist found herself moving to Paris, for a few months that stretched into years. The cultural relationship is challenging enough, leaving aside the more intimate personal story (though readers do learn enough about Turnbull's now husband to understand her decision to stay), and she writes of finding work, making friends, surviving dinner parties and adapting to the rhythms and pace of life with a Parisian boyfriend with humor and a developing sense of wisdom. Of the struggle to adapt to her new home in the mid-1990s, the author writes, "I've discovered a million details that matter to me-details that define me as non-French" no matter how much she tries to assimilate, while over time she grows to appreciate some perplexing aspects of French culture, as "[e]veryday incidences elevate into moments of clarity simply because they would never, ever happen in your old home," from developing her confrontational side enough to defend herself (in French) from rude remarks to receiving advice from "a terribly chic blonde who advises me to use eye-makeup remover on Maddie's [Turnbull's dog's] leaky eyes." This is an engaging, endearing view of the people and places of France.

From School Library Journal
Adult/High School-This account of a 20-plus Australian woman's adventures as she tried to adjust to Parisian ways is both insightful and funny. Having taken a year off from her job with a TV network, Turnbull moved to Paris to be with her new lover, Frederic. She found that the French weren't interested in making new friends; were unwilling to discuss their jobs, hobbies, or much of anything except the food they were eating, planning to eat, or had eaten; and they wished to socialize in mixed groups-no girls' night out for them. But Frederic, with patience and aplomb, helped her overcome these obstacles, depicted in a series of vignettes that sketch many of the fascinations and foibles of becoming "almost French." She detested visiting Frederic's family in northern France, with its rainy, cold beaches, but finally warmed to his home, and was accepted by them. The couple's marriage was almost an anticlimax after a hilarious birthday celebration for 80 at the old home. This clash of cultures is, ultimately, a love story.

From Booklist
Turnbull, an Australian journalist, made a life-changing decision at age 27, when she took a yearlong leave of absence to travel the world. While in Bulgaria, she met a Frenchman, whom she arranged to visit later in Paris. The visit went well (despite her doubts in the intervening months about the wisdom of her decision and her alarm at finding adult comic books upon arriving at his apartment)--so well that she moved in soon after and has been living in France ever since, ultimately marrying the man who on their first meeting described himself as "maniac." (She later understood that he meant "neat freak.") Turnbull's account of navigating another culture, learning a new language, and reinventing her professional self is a delight to read, filled with observational humor. We know she's truly integrated when she gets a small terrier (that she then spends obscene amounts of money taking to a chic dog-grooming salon) and is able to flip insults back in French to a rude customer in a patisserie. An absolutely spot on description of life in Paris as an expat.
By Janine Hardy
I'm actually re-reading this book in Paris right now. A friend loaned me her copy when I went to France a few years ago.
If you'd like some insight into the French psyche then this book has it.
Sarah tells of her real life experience of meeting a Frenchman while working in Bucharest (she is Australian). Within a very short time she moves in with Frederique and is still there seven years later when she writes this book. She beautifully describes her love/ hate relationship with Paris, one of the world's most beautiful, incredible cities but often one of the most inhospitable.

If you dream of moving to France one day or just want to read about someone who took the leap then this is the book for you. Her experience is difficult yet romantic and beautiful; that's Paris for you!

Love this book
By Susan A. Hays
I bought this book (on paper) when it first came out. One of my best friends had lived in Paris for several years and I was fortunate to have been able to visit many times. This book gave me a small glimpse of what she went through being a stranger in a strange land. For some reason this weekend I decided I had to read it again so purchased it for my kindle. And it's still as good a book years later. Sarah is a very good writer and, perhaps, a better story teller. Her experiences are interesting and enlightening. Her sense of humor and her ability to relate the same are exquisite. I feel badly for those French women who wouldn't give her the time of day - she is the sort of person that most women would (underline) want for a friend. As mentioned, I love this book. I wish she would write a sequel as I would love to know how everything has turned out..

great memoir
By bookmagic
Sarah Turnbull is a twenty-something journalist from Australia taking some time off to backpack around Europe. She meets Frederic and goes to visit him in Paris and ends up staying.
Sarah has a lot of problems with the language, the politics and each chapter is mainly about various facets of her life in France.

Frederic does not live in Paris proper, so eventually he and Sarah buy an apartment in the city and we learn the intricacies of French real estate. When they decide to have a window put in, they have to do it on the sly to avoid all the red-tape and then pay off any neighbors that complain.

I skimmed most of the politics stuff, but I enjoyed all the food discussions and her foray into fashion journalism.

My favorite chapter was when she and Frederic decide to get a dog, Maddie. The French may be very reserved but not when it comes to their pets. Sarah finds her fellow Parisians become very talkative and interested in Maddie. I love that dogs are welcome in all the cafes, shops, and even the butcher shops. And they have lots of very fancy dog groomers that are not just for the rich but anyone that does not want to be scorned and yelled at for not taking proper care of their dogs.

This was billed as a look at love and life in France but it is much more life than love. Which is fine, no one needs another sappy, romantic memoir. I enjoyed this very much and is a great addiction for any Francophile.

my rating 4/5

Siddhartha's Brain: Unlocking the Ancient Science of Enlightenment, by James Kingsland

By the longtime Guardian science journalist,a groundbreaking exploration of the science of enlightenment and mental wellness, illuminated by twin perspectives, ancient and modern: the spiritual wisdom of Siddhartha Gautama and the revelations of today’s scientists, who are confirming the Buddha’s profound insights into the human mind

In the fifth century BCE, in northern India, Siddhartha, the wandering sage who became the Buddha, developed a program, rooted in meditation and mindfulness, for mastering the mind and achieving lasting peace and contentment. Twenty-five centuries later, humans have transformed everything about our world—except our brains, which remain the same powerful yet flawed instruments possessed by our ancestors. What if the solution we seek to the psychological problems of life in the digital age—distraction, anxiety, addiction, loss of deep meaning—had already been worked out by the Buddha in ancient India? Appealing to readers of Eastern wisdom and Jon Kabat-Zinn, as well as to fans of bestsellers by Oliver Sacks and Malcolm Gladwell, acclaimed science writer and practicing Buddhist James Kingsland reveals how scientists are now unlocking the remarkable secrets of Siddhartha’s brain.

Moving effortlessly between science and scripture, Kingsland charts Siddhartha’s spiritual journey and explains how new research by leading neuroscientists and clinical psychologists—many of whom are interviewed in these pages—suggests that mindfulness practice reconfigures our brains to make us sharper, smarter, healthier, and happier, and that it can help treat stress, anxiety, depression, chronic pain, hypertension, and substance abuse. There have even been hints that meditation can enhance immune function, slow cellular aging, and keep dementia at bay. Featuring six guided meditations, Siddhartha’s Brain is a practical and inspiring odyssey of mind and spirit.

“Our life is shaped by our mind; we become what we think.”—Siddhartha

Review
“Fascinating. ... Whether you’re a skeptic or a true believer, exploring Siddhartha’s brain offers compelling insights and invites further questions about the potential of the human mind.” (Chicago Tribune)

“Reveals not only how mindfulness meditation can rewire the human brain and help us achieve a sense of spiritual fulfillment but also how we can easily integrate the practice into our daily lives.” (Scientific American)

“[A] fascinating exploration of the neuroscience behind meditation. ... Kingsland skillfully dives in and out of various subjects -- the neurological relaxation response to meditation, the difference between pain and suffering, emotional regulation -- and effectively paints a neurological picture of the mind without devaluing Buddhism’s spiritual image of cognition.” (Publishers Weekly)

“It’s a pleasure to read Siddhartha’s Brain. ... A smart, accessible balance of philosophical teachings and brain science and how meditation can relate to everything from addiction to Alzheimer’s disease.” (Associated Press)

“Brain science and Buddhist lore combine in this compelling treatise on the benefits of meditation and mindfulness.” (Kirkus Reviews)

“Kingsland expertly weaves the story and teachings of the Buddha with clinical and scientific research to engage in a highly readable examination of the benefits of mindfulness and meditation. ... A satisfying read.” (Library Journal (starred review))

Excellent introduction - scientific and fair
By Peter Stuckings
Imaginatively written, covering many of the key points - this is a great introduction to Buddhism for a modern Western person with no background in the subject.
As a scholar of Buddhist studies and a meditator, I've searched for years for a single book that would introduce my favourite topic to friends and family unfamiliar with it, without boring them to tears with complex ancient Indian cosmology, or turning them off with references to mystical mumbo jumbo.
This book, Siddhartha's Brain, seems to walk the fine line well between too much information (complex terminology) and not enough (skimming over important points). The author approaches the subject with an air of skepticism, which is helpful to the modern secular mindset, before progressing to showing the veracity of the claims. He uses science extensively, which ends up being the book's only drawback - a little too many 'a study showed that...' type references. He also tends to take the latest unresolved scientific issues as a springboard into speculation, a little too often. But in the end, it does no harm because he's hinting that beneath all the historical and cultural mumbo jumbo around traditional Buddhism, there is some very real value in its teachings, even if the science isn't yet up to the stage of being able to document it.
So if you're a newcomer who is curious as to what this whole Buddhism gig is about, do yourself a favour and read this. And then sit ;-)

A very intelligent enlightenment book...
By M. Benson
This book provides a very articulate and thorough explanation of what enlightenment is scientifically and according to Buddhists texts, and the processes believed to get there. I especially liked the ancient Buddhist quotes and teachings, which lay the grounding philosophy for what I want from enlightenment.

Great insights into the human mind.
By VCEF
Loved this book. It provided so much insight. It is not a religious book per se although it is not hostile to religion. It is more psychological and neurological than I expected but I loved it all.

The Uninnocent: Stories, by Bradford Morrow

A New York Times Book Review Editors' Choice

Bradford Morrow’s stories have garnered him awards such as the O. Henry and Pushcart Prizes and have given him a devoted following. Now gathered here for the first time is a collection of his most darkly comic, masterfully written tales.

A young man whose childhood hobby of collecting sea shells and birds’ nests takes a sinister turn when he becomes obsessed with acquiring his brother’s girlfriend, in “The Hoarder” (selected as one of the Best American Noir Stories of the Century). An archeologist summoned to attend his beloved sister’s funeral is astonished to discover it is not she who has died, but someone much closer to him, in “Gardener of Heart.” A blind motivational speaker has a crisis of faith when he suddenly regains his sight, only to discover life was better lived in the dark, in “Amazing Grace.”

In all of these stories, readers will find themselves enthralled and captivated by one of the major voices in contemporary American fiction.

From Publishers Weekly
Conjunctions founding editor Morrow (The Diviner's Tale), creates beautifully dark and soulfully intimate stories in his first collection, featuring characters who, though hardly citizens of virtue, reveal their true colors with little remorse. Each tale is told close at hand, with first-person narrators drawing the reader into their confidence, making readers complicit in shadowy inner workings that they don't completely understand. A man who enjoys collecting trinkets sets his sights dangerously on his brother's girlfriend in "The Hoarder." A blind man, in "Amazing Grace," regains his sight only to realize that the enlightened life he had imagined for himself is actually shrouded in darkness. After misplacing his mind, a man finds that, "whereas before he was dependable (had been with the same accounting firm for fifteen years, was the star shortstop on their interleague softball team), he now became not just unreliable, but entirely unpredictable," in "Mis(Laid)." In the sinister "Tsunami," a wife and mother relays the details of her unraveled marriage, remaining matter-of-fact: "This story doesn't get any better, so if you wanted to stop here I certainly wouldn't blame you. I can even tell you what happens so you won't have to bother." Morrow's stories are hauntingly honest and linger in the consciousness. (Dec.)

From Library Journal
A teenage boy obsessively (and surreptitiously) photographs his older brother’s girlfriend. An electrical worker who turns motivational speaker after he’s blinded in an accident miraculously regains his sight and discovers that life was better when he couldn’t see. A young wife prone to fugue states is at the center of a series of murders that involve her husband, her children, and her husband’s lover. A teenage boy murders his grandmother’s male friend, whom he believes to be a Martian landed on Earth as part of the invasion that captivated the country in Orson Welles’s broadcast of War of the Worlds—and no trace of the body can be found. What links all these dark tales from Morrow (The Diviner’s Tale) is that the main characters live in the shadowland where normalcy and mania and at times even depravity meet. VERDICT Hanging on the voices of their narrators—at once fascinating in their fixations and repelling in their twisted logic—and mixing elements of Southern gothic and noir, these powerful tales will linger in the reader’s mind. —Lawrence Rungren, Merrimack Valley Lib. Consortium, North Andover, MA

From Booklist
Founding editor of the literary journal Conjunctions and an accomplished novelist (The Diviner’s Tale, 2011), Morrow presents his first short story collection, and it’s a chiller. A consummate stylist, Morrow is at his unnerving best in these stealthily and irrevocably bad-to-worse, twenty-first-century gothic tales. In “Tsunami,” a woman overwhelmed by televised bloodshed and the violent deaths of people close to her warns, “This story doesn’t get any better, so if you want to stop here I certainly wouldn’t blame you.” And she isn’t kidding—this is one horrific tale. But we read on, mesmerized by Morrow’s matter-of-fact relentlessness, the surprise of his plot twists, the blossoming of insanity and terror. Betrayed husbands stoke “(Mis)laid,” a breathless tale of revenge, and “Amazing Grace,” a letter-perfect, old-fashioned tale in which a man blinded in an accident becomes a megasuccessful motivational speaker and a pawn. Pathological sibling relationships are a recurring catalyst for psychologically complex nightmare scenarios. Morrow evinces an eerie and seductive sureness in summoning the inexplicable and the unnerving in these shrewd and shivery tales of madness and mayhem. --Donna Seaman

An enthralling collection
By Pickfordm
"The Uninnocent," the wonderful new book of short fiction from Bradford Morrow, manages to be at once luminous and dark. Each story takes a brave look at the underside of characters who often narrate their own tales. I agree with the reviewers on this page who read these stories slowly. Because of the macabre, noir nature of the material, its narrative richness, its descriptive powers, and the multitude of surprise endings, these are stories to be savored rather than hurried through in one or two sittings. Also, as Morrow subtly foreshadows many of the twists and turns early on, a rereading yields its own rewards, perhaps revealing clues missed the first time around.

It's hard to single out the best pieces in such a uniformly fine collection, but my current favorites are "Gardener of Heart" and "The Enigma of Grover's Mill." In the first, the funeral of a beloved twin sister brings an archaeologist back to the home town he long ago abandoned. Though their paths forked outwardly, he learns, their deep love for one another inexorably binds them. "The Enigma of Grover's Mill" contains a lot of death, an alien invasion, radio hoaxes and (maybe) murder. Simultaneously, it's a coming-of-age tale filled with nostalgia, mourning, the wonders of adolescence and love.

Also powerful is "The Hoarder," a creepy story which reminded me of John Fowles' masterfully chilling novel "The Collector." In "Ellie's Idea" a woman decides to wipe her moral slate clean, purifying herself and hopefully winning back her husband, by apologizing to everyone for every bad act she believes she's committed. This one snuck up on and eventually enfolded me; the character for whom I felt empathy at the outset became the one from whose clutches I eventually wanted to escape. "Lush" intertwines romantic love and alcohol addiction so seductively it made me feel the narrator's addiction. Indeed, for the duration of the story I almost shared it.

All this gets to the heart of what I loved about "The Uninnocent." At a reading I attended, a fan asked Morrow how he managed to create an entire world in the space of a short story. After some thought, he ascribed it to the specificity of detail, which certainly fleshes out his works and gives them resonance. In addition, the specificity, the psychological depth, and the humanness of even the most monstrous of the characters pulled me into the stories and kept me there.

An absolutely delicious read
By pokeybear
I have never read anything by this author before and am so very glad this was my introduction to his work. Some of the very best writing I've come across in recent years, each story was brilliantly crafted, so beautifully and carefully written. I was incredibly impressed by how seamlessly the author slipped into such different voices so convincingly in each story. Reading this book was like attending a seminar in how to write the perfect short story. Some really hauntingly beautiful pieces in this collection, and of course, some wonderfully fractured ones as well! A fabulous read!

Beautifully written tales themed with sins, madness, obsession and loss
By DoskoiPanda
Bradford Morrow's The Uninnocent is a collection of short stories, each with a theme of various sins, madness, obsessions and other transgressions, or loss. Beautifully written, the darkness in the stories gently takes root and flowers in subtly hideous and frightening ways - the soothing hiss of a serpent's voice - all the more effective because of the gentle language, while the melancholic notes of the more poignant tales draw upon memories of living, of joy and grief, to shape the tales. (Please note: when I describe these as hideous and frightening, I mean something more in line with Henry James' Turn of the Screw; psychological rather than thriller.)

This was not a quick read for me, the stories are beautifully and richly written, giving the kind of reading experience that you have to allow to sink in slowly. You could read this quickly, but end up with a sense of reading fatigue; your brain bloated with all the stories. So I'm not sure I would recommend this to a casual reader for beach or travel reading, but I would recommend it to people who enjoy the experiences of reading the literary equivalent of after-dinner dessert wine.

4.5 or 5 stars. If you've enjoyed Joyce Carol Oates' Southern Gothic stories, you'll probably enjoy these, though I'd relabel them as Northeastern Gothic, for, if there is such a thing, this would be it.
