T.M. philosophically speaking (my take).

I feel this is the best philisophical treatise I've ever read bar none. I have read it too (three times). I feel the opening part (just before the table of contents) is most important: "To the lovers of life desirous of enjoying all glories worldly and divine." Or if you prefer divine and worldly. The point here is that our worldly aspirations are just as important as our spiritual ones. "It's all good" to quote the rappers, or to quote an other source: "I want it all" (not just a little or some). Validating our worldly aspirations as well as our spiritual ones helps to make living on this planet worthwhile by virtue of the fact (like it or not) that our best efforts are motivated in a way that simple spirituality could not. In other words the earth is just as sacred as the sky. His focus is not specifically seculararity but I feel that his point that worldly aspirations are also valid and important should be emphasized. All in all I feel that this is an important book and I sincerely recommend it for thoughtful and intelligent people.

This is a complete book about integrated living. It covers every area of life in human development. It says that life is meant to be lived free from problems and suffering, enjoying success doing all good for oneself, for one's community, for one's country and for the world. Most important it is not just a pie-in-the-sky theory, but it provides a scientifically validated technique to achieve this goal of enlightened blissful living for everyone. I highly recommend it as book most worthy of its title. Every person who wants to improve self and fellow beings should acquaint himself/herself with this knowledge and the formula suggested in the book.

It is a lot to think about, with concepts that are new to me, so I read it carefully. I believe I will read it again in the future. I've been trying the meditation (using my own mantra), and it does help me calm down. The messages in this book are beautiful. We need more goodness in the world.

Sommerstein's introduction and commentary are thorough and thought provoking, and always eminently readable and clear. This is one of the longer Cambridge commentaries I've read, but it was never too dense to read quickly. Enough grammatical assistance is offered that the intermediate student should be fine without a translation or any other materials except the LSJ.

About the Author
David Myers received his psychology Ph.D. from the University of Iowa. He has spent his career at Hope College, Michigan, where he has taught dozens of introductory psychology sections. Hope College students have invited him to be their commencement speaker and voted him "outstanding professor."

His research and writings have been recognized by the Gordon Allport Intergroup Relations Prize, by a 2010 Honored Scientist award from the Federation of Associations in Behavioral & Brain Sciences, by a 2010 Award for Service on Behalf of Personality and Social Psychology, by a 2013 Presidential Citation from APA Division 2, and by three dozen honorary doctorates.

With support from National Science Foundation grants, Myers' scientific articles have appeared in three dozen scientific periodicals, including Science, American Scientist, Psychological Science, and the American Psychologist. In addition to his scholarly writing and his textbooks for introductory and social psychology, he also digests psychological science for the general public. His writings have appeared in four dozen magazines, from Today's Education to Scientific American. He also has authored five general audience books, including The Pursuit of Happiness and Intuition: Its Powers and Perils.

David Myers has chaired his city's Human Relations Commission, helped found a thriving assistance center for families in poverty, and spoken to hundreds of college and community groups. Drawing on his experience, he also has written articles and a book (A Quiet World) about hearing loss, and he is advocating a transformation in American assistive listening technology (see www.hearingloop.org). For his leadership, he received an American Academy of Audiology Presidential Award in 2011, and the Hearing Loss Association of America Walter T. Ridder Award in 2012. He bikes to work year-round and plays daily pick-up basketball. David and Carol Myers have raised two sons and a daughter, and have one granddaughter to whom he dedicates the Third Edition of Psychology in Everyday Life.

Great book for beginners

This book is great for an introduction to PSYCHOLOGY. My psychology 101 teacher requested the class to buy this great book. It gives you a summery of each sections of psychology. This is a great book for beginners. I learned a bit about the anatomy of the brain and the neurons; it takes you step by step. This book made me think a lot about how healthy I was mentally. It spoke about drug problems, family issues, extended families, growing up issues, etc. This book doesn't only educate you, it also helps you identify problems and solve them. I would totally recommend this book to those student who are planning a career in psychology.

David Morrell is best known for testosterone-fueled thrillers like Extreme Denial and First Blood (whose excellent movie version, reissued on DVD in 1999, stars Sylvester Stallone as Rambo). But Morrell has also penned many frightfully scary short stories. In Black Evening, he presents 16 of his favorites, each with a fascinating introduction explaining what provoked him to write it.

"The Dripping" (1971) came to the author in a dream that most would regard as a nightmare. In this eerie little number, a father faces his worst fear when his family goes missing. Morrell suffered his own family tragedy in January of 1987, when his son Matt was diagnosed with bone cancer. "Orange Is for Anguish, Blue for Insanity" (the Horror Writers Association's best novella of 1988) was written shortly before Matt's death. Writing about a mad painter kept Morrell sane: "The made-up horror was paradoxically providing a barrier from real-life horror." But after Matt's death, Morrell was besieged with panic attacks, and could do nothing but "stare at the ceiling" for three years. A harrowing story about lost children and a long buried family secret, "The Beautiful Uncut Hair of Graves" (another HWA award-winner) signified Morrell's return to short fiction. Though best known for his high-action thrillers, Morrell has traveled many side roads in his long writing career--horror novels, westerns, even a highly personal account of his teenage son's losing battle with cancer. Now, he offers up a generally intriguing but uneven collection of 15 short stories written over a 20-year period ending in 1992. Many of the entries here are vintage Morrell, featuring dark themes, dark humor, bursts of action, a setting that's slightly askew and a main character driven by fear. "The Typewriter" tells of a writer's panic when his magic typewriter no longer turns out bestsellers. "At My Back I Always Hear" is a haunting account of a college professor (which Morrell once was) stalked by a student. The best of the stories showcase Morrell's ability to capture pure, hard-driving suspense, often culminating in unspeakable tragedy or bizarre discovery. These include "Orange Is for Anguish, Blue for Insanity" and "The Beautiful Uncut Hair of Graves." The weaker links among the entries are those with a decidedly creepy bent representative of Morrell's horror period. Among them are "The Dripping," Morrell's first published work; "Black Evening"; and "For These and All My Sins." Even the less successful stories, however, have a gripping quality--some twist or mood that drives the plot forward and locks a reader's attention. Morrell (The Brotherhood of the Rose) prefaces all the stories with personal anecdotes and other autobiographical reflections that place them in a meaningful context. In a foreword and afterword, Morrell talks about his career thus far.

Finally in one volume

There have been several times that I have bought an anthology like "Prime Evil" so that I could read an otherwise unreleased Stephen King or Clive Barker story, and ended up being blown away by the stories of David Morrell. Finally, K-Tel-like, everyone can enjoy these powerful, imaginative stories without having to buy a dozen other books.
While this collection does not contain all of Morrell's short fiction, it does contain all that I had read in other anthologies, most notably the powerhouse novella "Orance is for Anguish, Blue for Insanity," one of my all-time pieces of fiction, short or otherwise. I am a fan of author notes in collections, and Morrell doesn't disappoint. While he doesn't expound the way that, say, Harlan Ellison does, there are short notes before each store in addition to a Foreword and Afterword, and these add a texture to the book that I think makes your first read more enjoyable and increases the re-readability. Plus if you've already read a couple of these in anthologies it is nice to see the author's perspective instead of the anthology editor's perspective before the stories.
I read this during a particularly hot summer week and found it to be perfect for this setting...the stories are engrossing enough that I forgot about the heat, and a few times I caught a genuine bit of a chill! Anyone who enjoys dark stories or speculative fiction should give this great book a read.

Great stories, vintage Morrell!

I just read a few of the stories in "Black Evening" and had a lot of scary delights. David Morrell is great when it comes to suspense and thrillers and now, horror. He mixes a sense of his thrillers in with his horror stories making them much more exciting. I could even go on to compare with Stephen Kings short stories in "Skeleton Crew" Well done Mr.Morrell!

Densely Packed with Useful Explanations

From the very start the book presents useful knowledge in an orderly fashion. It starts with a brief but useful background of the development path of the language and then jumps straight into the groundwork of datatypes. Then it builds up, methodically and expressively from there.

You can follow along by executing all the code samples in LINQPad, which you can download for free. You can download all the examples in the book from the "Samples" tab in LINQPad. A folder tree presents each of the chapters and topics in the book and within each of these is the code which you can run by clicking the play button. This is how all programming should be taught. Then you can continue to use LINQPad as an invaluable tool for querying databases and web data in your work life.

There is a downside to getting the Kindle edition. The code font is strangely small. All through the book the very text which is the subject of the book is written in a minute font size that is less than half the size of the normal text. Until this is fixed in the Kindle edition it will be a constant annoyance. You either have to make your normal text absurdly large, which will affect all the formatting of every page, or you will find yourself squinting and leaning forward every time the book gets to the interesting part.

UPDATE: The Kindle problem is only in the CLOUD READER. The installed PC reader is probably better anyway and does not suffer at all from this problem. I use the installed Kindle for PC and the Kindle for Android on my Galaxy S3 with no problems at all.

Great Book, Reference manual etc.

I have almost all C# books dating back to 2002. While Troleson and Macdonald do a nice job in their books (my ex-favorites), the Alhabari brothers do a better job! They have intimate detail of what happens behind the scenes, and they stick to a formula of being "Clear" "Complete" and "Concise".

If you are on the fence on this (like me) because you already have all the books and have been into C# for about 10 years, do yourself a favor and buy this book. One of the coolest things about this book is that it is a full 2" less wide than the other mule-chokers. At 1000+ pages, I am able to handle the book with ease and use it in the way a true desk reference book should be used.

I'd rate it six stars if I could.

Definitely a Reference and not a tutorial

I"ve got mixed feelings about this book. Since it is clearly labeled a Reference, I can't fault it for being just that. It covers a huge array of topics but to me, it reads too much like a bunch of man page. It tells you exactly what each class does but what it's missing for me are the scenarios where these classes and object can be used.

In the description of a class or method, the authors give an example that completely demonstrates the method but I found myself having to study it very hard to figure out what they are trying to show and how I might be able to use it in my own program.

I will definitely use this book as the reference that it is but I may look for another that is a bit more of a tutorial for C#.
