About the Author
Mark Ryan Talabis is the Chief Threat Scientist of Zvelo Inc. Previously he was the Director of the Cloud Business Unit of FireEye Inc. He was also the Lead Researcher and VP of Secure DNA and was an Information Technology Consultant for the Office of Regional Economic Integration (OREI) of the Asian Development Bank (ADB). 


He is co-author of the book "Information Security Risk Assessment Toolkit: Practical Assessments through Data Collection and Data Analysis" from Syngress. He has presented in various security and academic conferences and organizations around the world including Blackhat, Defcon, Shakacon, INFORMS, INFRAGARD, ISSA, and ISACA. He has a number of published papers to his name in various peer-reviewed journals and is also an alumni member of the Honeynet Project.

He has a Master of Liberal Arts Degree (ALM) in Information Technology from Harvard University and a Master of Science (MS) degree in Information Technology from Ateneo de Manila University. He holds several certifications including a Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP); Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA); and Certified in Risk and Information Systems Control (CRISC).

Robert McPherson leads a team of data scientists for a Fortune 100 Insurance and Financial Service company in the US. He has 13 years of experience as a leader of research and analytics teams, specializing in predictive modeling, simulations, econometric analysis, and applied statistics. Bob works with a team of researchers who utilize simulation and big data methods to model the impact of catastrophes on millions of insurance policies...simulating up to 100,000 years of hurricanes, earthquakes, and wildfires, as well as severe winter and summer storms, on more than two trillion dollars worth of insured property value. He has used predictive modeling and advanced statistical methods to develop automated outlier detection methods, build automated underwriting models, perform product and customer segmentation analysis, and design competitor war game simulations.

I. Miyamoto is a computer investigator with a government agency. She has over 15 years of computer investigative and computer forensics experience and over 12 years intelligence analysis experience. She holds the following degrees: B.S. Software Engineering, B.A. in Japanese Language, M.A. in National Security and Strategic Studies, M.S. in Strategic Intelligence, M.A. in Management, M.Ed. in Special Education and Ed.D. in Education.

Jason Martin is Vice President of Cloud Business for FireEye, Inc. the global leader in advanced threat detection technology. Prior to joining FireEye Jason was the President and CEO of Secure DNA (acquired by FireEye), a company that provided innovative security products and solutions to companies throughout Asia-Pacific and the US Mainland. Customers included Fortune 1000 companies, global government agencies, state and local governments, and private organizations of all sizes. Mr. Martin has over fifteen years of experience in Information Security, is a published author and speaker, and is the co-founder of the Shakacon Security Conference.

A Good Companion

Often, you can tell the value of a book by what shape it's in. My copy of A Practical Guide to SysML is pretty beat up. Not only does it have a lot of my own scribbling in the margins and blue and yellow highlighting (blue for things to come back and skim and yellow for things to absolutely visit again), it has coffee, peach and other various stains. This book resides in my brief case (my satchel bag) and goes with me ("A Good Companion") when I have to accompany my wife on errands (if I am 30 minutes in any place I will read a passage or two). With this book and an iPod, I can handle anything including long waits in any airport or any delays anywhere.

Sandy and the team do an outstanding job of introducing the reader into one of the most important new System Engineering tools available today; SysML. As pointed out by others, it's not just about software anymore, it often about architectures and the enterprise. As the trends in system development move from platform centric to NetCentric, as work for organizations moves from individuals to collaborative enterprise efforts and as we all try to improve our processes and add value to collaborative efforts, a model of "what we're doing" becomes so important. The team does an outstanding job of presenting the concept of Model Based System Engineering (MBSE) in Chapter 2 and providing a great example to follow in the subsequent chapters. Throughout the book, the explanation of the diagrams and concepts are thorough and easy to understand. I thank the authors for making it interesting and relevant.

For those just starting in the field, this book is an outstanding accompaniment to any of the SysML CASE tools that are emerging. In fact, I highly recommend to anybody who is going to be working in the System Engineering field (be it automotive, aerospace, civil engineering, architecture, software, disaster relief, etc.) to keep a copy of this book handy in case you get delayed some place and want make use of some spare time.

Post Scrip (Feb 09) - I had the great fortune of attending a two day intense INCOSE sponsored tutorial on SysML taught by Sandy in Old Town Pasadena Nov 08. Wow, what a drink from the knowledge fire hose. Sandy's insight in model organization (using block diagrams for domain modeling) of complex projects was just one stunning eye opener. If anybody gets a chance to attend of one these, do it.

Review of Part I

So far, I have read all of part one and sizeable portions of subsequent text. Part One, about 60 pages long, is one of the best introductions to a very technical book aimed at the semi-technical audience. Through example, easy-to-follow diagrams & well-written English, the authors nearly seduce their readership into wanting to master the remainder of this long systems engineering text focussed on a highly-regard industry standard (OMG SysML). Part one is suitable for assignment as a week's worth of reading in Undergraduate and Graduate courses in Systems Engineering.

Good guide for those looking to get a solid into to information security data analytics

Getting log data is not an IT challenge. But the information security challenge and a huge struggle for those who are tasked with it, is making sense of a near infinite amount of data.

In Information Security Analytics: Finding Security Insights, Patterns, and Anomalies in Big Data, authors Mark Talabis, Robert McPherson, I. Miyamoto and Jason Martin have created a brief guide that shows how you can take the myriad raw data, and turn it into meaningful analytics.

The authors focus on the methods that are particularly useful for discovering security breaches and attacks, which can be implemented via either free software, or using commonly available software.

Like most titles on data analytics, the book places a heavy influence on R, is a programming language and software environment for statistical computing.

The book is a good how-to guide with plenty of coding examples, to show the reader how to effectively use the tools to make sense of the data they have.

For those new to the topic of data analytics, Data-Driven Security: Analysis, Visualization and Dashboards by Jay Jacobs and Bob Rudis is the gold-standard on the topic.

This book builds on that with an emphasis on information security is a worth a read for those with an interest in the topic.

Proof of the sorry state of today's academic world

A collection of essays, infused with Marxist and post-modernist jargon, dedicated to the proposition that
global hip-hop (one of America's most pernicious exports to the world) represents resistance to the evil
hegemony of Western discourse. That most of the purveyors of this often subliterate pseudo-scholarship
have academic affiliations is a sad commentary on the intellectual degeneracy of the American university,
which is increasingly a factory for the production of ideology and social engineering.

Self-centred, domineering (NOT dominating) male leads

I really liked how the story started, but after that it went downhill fast. I liked how Nick and Sean have been observing Megan, so they're not just attracted to her for how she looks, but also because they've seen her kind heart. I liked how Megan had been shyly stealing glances at them every time they visited her office building, but thinking she probably wouldn't have a chance with two such handsome hunks. The beginning was very promising.

But then... when the guys find out she has lost her job... and they feel responsible for it... instead of approaching her with an offer like a normal person, they pay her rent anonymously, go behind her back and arrange things with her roommate so that she's put in a position she's extremely uncomfortable with. That's creepy stalker behavior. Couldn't they have just approached Megan directly and asked her out to dinner, like any other normal man who's interested in a woman? Apparently not.

And then, when they realize she's new to BDSM, do they slow down and try to ease her into it, gradually introduce her to their world? No, they warn her, "We play hard," and proceed to take the crop to her as a punishment for "insolence", when they had not told her earlier that she should not do the thing they were punishing her for. That was unfair and uncalled for. The only saving grace was that they allowed her to choose a safe word before they started. They're very rough with her, they threaten to punish her further if she screams or makes any sounds -- this despite the fact that they know all this is new to her, the first time she's experiencing pain this way, she's never learned how to contain herself. I felt that it was unreasonable and it ruined the story for me. Not caring, not romantic, just selfish and self-centred. Only about what THEY wanted, not about what she might want. They didn't think about how frightening she might be finding it... granted she had a safe word and could use it, and granted she seemed to be getting turned on by what they were doing to her, but still...

So I didn't like Nick and Sean, I didn't get the sense that they cared for Megan. The way they tried to dictate to her and run her life -- "You aren't to dress like this in public again" -- if they were in a relationship, perhaps they might have a right to say that, but at that point, there was no relationship to speak of. There's a thin line between being dominating and domineering, and they crossed it. The story was hot, yeah, but the male leads quite ruined it for me.

Kind of Creepy, and Too Domineering For Me . . . (Mild Spoilers Ahead)

The two male leads in this story are not very nice and they don't treat the female lead very well in my opinion. I like stories that may contain domination, but at the core the characters cherish each other in equal measure. This is not the case with this story. The men's behavior is 'stalker-ish' in the beginning and kind of scary somewhere in the middle. I mean, at one point they grab her up from her waitress job and even though she is clearly struggling and doesn't want to go with them, not one person who sees what's going on tries to help her. And it's not like there were any indications to the witnesses that the three of them had any form of a relationship. But they didn't interfere because they were employees of the two male leads or their friends who subscribe to the BDSM lifestyle. So these guys could have been abducting her to rape and disembowel her . . . and nobody did anything to stop them. I kept thinking that it's a good thing these were supposedly "good" guys, because if they ever turn abusive toward her, she won't have anyone to help her and no way to escape. Even her roommate (who doesn't even know the male leads) helps them get to her, after the female lead explicitly said she didn't want to speak to them again after the first encounter she had with them (which said roommate had also set up). Creepy. And time for a new roommate.

Then there's the whole punishing her for breaking rules that she wasn't even aware of. And then when she complains about the unfairness of that, they tell her "life isn't fair". I kept wondering why she stayed with them when they kept doing things she didn't like and that were setting off warning bells in here head. Very dysfunctional. In fact, her internal dialogue during some of the scenes was quite uncomfortable. They're punishing her or do something to her, and she wants to use her safe word, but talks herself out of it at the last minute because she wants them so badly. I could be wrong, but I don't think that doms in healthy relationships want their subs ignoring their limits because they're afraid of losing them. And I suppose some people get off on the whole punishment for making sounds thing, but to me that just seems to take all the fun out of it and makes for an extremely tense scene. Just wrong. Not my cup of tea. The writing in this story isn't bad in of itself. Just didn't like the storyline or character behavior. Glad this book was free.

Disappointing all around...

I really did not care for this book. I felt like there was little to no story and what little there was was only a vehicle to deliver sex. Don't get me wrong I love sex in a book as much as most readers but I don't enjoy feeling like the story takes second place to the sex. The story (IMHO) should take precedence over the sex not the other way around. I don't think I will be reading any more from this author.

An Excellent Introduction

Romaine provides an excellent introduction to the field of bilingualism. Of the texts I have read on the topic, this is perhaps the one that finds the best balance between readability and comprehensiveness. She covers the main subfields of bilingualism, and discusses numerous studies in the field. If you're just getting into the field, this will serve as a great guide, and you'll be able to find some great resources which you'll then be able to pursue independently. I strongly recommend this as the first book to read on bilingualism. After you read this, then you can move on to more advanced texts.

Bought for a class, but enjoyed materials covered in book

I had to buy this for my FLA 499 Bilingualism and Languages in Contact class at ASU. There is a lot of material covered in the book by the author, but it's very informative and gives good references for further research on bilingualism/linguistics. Glad the professor picked this book--I still reference it for research/sources in my other linguistics classes.

About the Author

Sir Karl Popper was one of the foremost philosophers of the Twentieth century. Born in Vienna in 1902, Popper grew up in a city witnessing great intellectual ferment. His relationship with the philosophers and scientists led to his first book, The Logic of Scientific Discovery, published in 1934. On its publication in English in 1959 it was described by The New Scientist as ‘one of the most important documents of the twentieth century’. On the eve of World War Two Popper was forced to flee to New Zealand, where he took up a teaching post at Canterbury University College at Christchurch. It was there, reflecting on the tyranny sweeping through Eastern Europe, that he wrote The Open Society and Its Enemies, published in 1945. In 1946 Popper moved to the London School of Economics, where he taught until his retirement in 1969. This period saw the publication of The Poverty of Historicism, described by the Sunday Times as ‘probably the only book which will outlive this century’. He was knighted in 1965 and appointed Companion of Honour in 1982. He died in 1994.

A truly great book

I read this book at age 27 and understood little of it. I read it again at 35 and began to understand it. I read it again at 41 and breathed it in like fresh air. I have just read it again at 48 and find so much more in it than I found even at the last reading. This is a book to be read and re-read, deeply understood, and mined for it's multitude of ideas and arguments. 5 stars indeed - I love this book.

Very interesting philosophical insights

This is an excellent work to read if you would like to think about what an "open society" is, and how it can be defended from the forces of what Karl Popper calls "historicist" thinking (which, in his view, leads to totalitarian modes of thought and utopian social engineering.) Popper's critique of Plato's political thought is especially interesting, as Popper claims that the totalitarian ideas which plagued the 20th Century -- most specifically Communism and National Socialism -- had their intellectual roots in Plato's writings. A fascinating read.

The Enemies at your Gate

Karl Popper is a philosopher of science of austrian origin and renowned for his groundbreaking work on “critical rationalism”.

His reflexions on the “falsifiability” of theories - a hallmark of genuine science - have been influential ever since and are easily misunderstood by the scientifically naive for being “anti-science”. Basically the term can be equated with “testable”. The reason why a negative outcome seems more conclusive is better understood by taking ino account that a positive outcome only confirms a facet of the scientific model of reality, which is never complete. You are probably approaching “truth” as long your theories are being “verified” but you are definitely on the wrong track whenever they are “falsified”. However, for those pursuing “truth” even that outcome is a gem of insight.

In his seminal work “The Open Society and Its Enemies” Karl Popper lays out, the philosophical origins of totalitarian ideas and hasn’t lost one iota of insightfulness. If you are tempted to think that Western “democracies” are further away from totalitarianism than the “People’s Republic of China” you might better think twice once you take into account the power of unelected oligarchs, most visible in the form of the contemporary “European Union”.

For a moment I was tempted to dispose of the book prematurely. The ideas of Plato seemed amateurish, arrogant and elitist to an extent that inevitably arose the question whether the problem was Plato himself or rather Popper’s elaborations.

However, it proved worthwhile to endure the initial drudgery and what remains is a deep disillusion with this “great” philosopher from antiquity. Still, disillusion is the end of an “illusion” and a such invaluable.

The reason why I bought this book in the first place was a debate with political agitators from the extreme-left, true minions of the “politically correct” cast and hard core “Alynskite” in the worst sense.

Ironically, the most extreme among them used to call on “Karl Popper” and his concept of falsification to routinely dismiss objections as if it was an argument in itself. Knowing only quotes from Karl Popper it was a mystery to me that apparent enemies of free thought could plead to K. Popper’s authority. I simply wanted wanted to "understand" this contradictory mindset and don’t get me wrong: Trying to understand a position is not to be confused with sharing it.

If you see Plato advocating totalitarian and elitist ideas in his writings, abusing Socrates as fictitious speaker against the Sophists you get a thorough insight into the character and integrity of this “master thinker” of antiquity.

The Sophists are obviously appreciated by Popper for their free and liberal thinking. Notably Protagoras and Gorgias are depicted as promoting an egalitarian humanism and being defenders of the athenian democracy. It is telling that in some people have denigrated Sophists, giving the term “sophistry" a derogatory twist.

Totalitarianism is still virulent in this world and the reason why it might escape your attention is that the same phenomena is rebranded and relabelled time and again. More often than not this is done consciously to obfuscate the truth on current political and religious affairs.

Popper elaborates extensively on the Hegel and his nefarious influence on German intellectual:

They complained that he rarely used the drafts which they had prepared for him.

George Yeo describes himself as a Taoist even though he is a Roman Catholic and is now on the Papal staff. Buddhists are surprised he championed the revival of Nalanda University as an international project. He remains close to Singaporeans of different races and religions even though he has a deep sense of his own ancestral roots and religion. In politics, he has been described both as a liberal and a conservative. In his Parliamentary maiden speech, he spoke of the importance of democracy but has repeated many times that democracy is only a means and not an end in itself. He has a deep interest in history which partly explains his seeing the re-emergence of China and India earlier than most others.

The bonsai and the banyan are metaphors he uses for Singapore. Singapore is a city-state and must never have an inflated view of itself. The bonsai describes Singapore modestly, but he adds that the bonsai can be intensely interesting and valuable. The banyan provides shade and we are grateful for it, but too much makes us weak. As for the Tao, that perhaps is what gives unity to his many interests.

George Yeo's 1991 speech on pruning the banyan tree of the Singapore state, a political canopy under which nothing could grow, heralded an era of activism by civil society, which had hitherto been seen as a threat to the dominance of the PAP state.

The ministerial speeches by Yeo an indefatigable writer are distinguished by his deep and clear thinking about the place of democracy in good governance. Yeo is what may be called a liberal conservative. An iconic product of Singapore's meritocratic but authoritarian system, he was a political conservative, believing in the need for discipline and stability above all in a city-state without the margin for error due to a lack of natural resources. Nevertheless, he was far-sighted enough to recognise that order and stability could survive only if the system were liberalised judiciously from within so as to attract and retain the idealism and energy of a younger and liberal citizenry.

A thinker and strategist, Yeo led the Singapore team which negotiated Free Trade Agreements with the United States, Japan, Australia and other countries. Controversially, he proposed the idea of having Integrated Resorts, including casinos, in Singapore, although his late father had had a problem with gambling. A true-blue Singapore pragmatist, he believes that policy-making often involves a choice between evils.

This book is a compilation of speeches selected from the entire range of what Yeo penned and delivered throughout his political life, covering from domestic issues, which have not lost their resonance today, to international realities in Southeast Asia, Northeast Asia, and the United States within which Singapore will have to survive and thrive.

About the Author
Asad-Ul Iqbal Latif is the author of several books, including Lim Kim San: A Builder of Singapore (2009) and Wang Gungwu: Junzi: Scholar-Gentleman in Conversation with Asad-ul Iqbal Latif (2010). He graduated with Honours in English from Presidency College, Calcutta, and received his Master of Letters degree in History at Clare Hall, Cambridge, where he was Raffles (Chevening) and S. Rajaratnam Scholar. He was a Fulbright Visiting Scholar at Harvard University's Weatherhead Center for International Affairs. A former journalist, Asad worked at The Statesman in Calcutta, Asiaweek in Hong Kong, and The Business Times and The Straits Times in Singapore. He was a Jefferson Fellow at the East-West Center in Hawaii.

Lee Huay Leng is currently the Deputy Editor of Lianhe Zaobao. Graduated from the National University of Singapore (NUS) and School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, UK, Huay Leng joined Lianhe Zaobao in 1994, first as a sports reporter, then political reporter and the paper's Hong Kong and China Bureau Chief. She began covering news of George Yeo since 1995 when he was the Minister for Information and the Arts. She is also the President of the civil society group The Tangent. She teaches at NUS and is an adjunct assistant professor at the Chinese department.

Great perspective on Southeast Asia

This book offers outstanding perspective on Southeast Asia. The author was a leading government and political official in Singapore for many years; educated in the UK and US; has met a lot of world leaders; and has great insights on the region and somewhat of a global perspective. The book offers mainly the type of analysis one would expect from a publication like the Economist but is also leavened with fascinating personal anecdotes, philosophical observations, strategic thinking, and some "Confucian" parables.

The format is a series of highly-readable essays, some recent and others dating back twenty years. While I favored the more recent essays, it is interesting to read back to get a sense of how Southeast Asia has evolved. It is also interesting to see how a country which once controlled information so tightly has learned to embrace social media
