An absolutely delightful guide to a magnificent sport.

This book is a fantastic introduction to the sport of Falconry. While it is by no means an exhaustive guidebook, it presents a clear path for those that wish to learn more about the sport. It emphasizes more than once, that falconry is not a sport that you can just pick up and put down, it is for serious hunters and bird lovers only.

Beautiful photography and colorful writing bring this short but fun book to life. I had a great time reading it and would recommend it to anyone who wishes to learn more about Falconry.

What sets this book apart is the professional and memorable style of the writing. The author has very deep knowledge and experience - and just as importantly he is able to communicate it in a very human, effective way. An excellent way to learn the basics of falconry, and highly recommended.

Balance Is The Key

Balance is key to both a healthy body and a happy life. That balance can be attained by studying the chinese five element theory, the characteristics of foods and simple massage and accupressure techniques.

Dr. Stephen Chang outlines the basics in an easily understandable manner. There are diagrams of the exercises, really simple massage techniques and the accupressure points. He includes his dietary plan with a fairly large selection of recipes.

I applaud his approach to diet. Exclusionary diets are almost certainly designed to fail. His position that even small quantities of junk food are good because they stimulate the liver makes sense. The internal organ massage exerices are amazing and effiective. I use the stomach massage for any digestive upset and thrilled with the results. The exercises are quite simple and take very little time.

However there are some points that I am not totally sold on. He advocates a strict adherence to a three meal a day plan with no snacks or none of the little mini meals that are so popular today. He insists that if you stick tojust the three meals a day, you will lose weight. My experience has been to the contrary. I am one of the many who are ravenous at three and find a healthy snack at that time staves off later overeating or binges.

He also limits the amount of water one is to drink to six cups a day. He claims that excess water leads to cellulite and excess weight. Prevailing thought is that excess water cannot hurt you; it is just excreted. Dehydration is the current hobgoblin of contemporary health concerns. Again,I think that balance is key and limitation is as hazardous as excess.

This is an interesting book,nicely written with some excellent points. It is a good introduction taoist theory and the internal organ exercises are well worth the purchase price price.

The Tao of Balanced diet

My friend and I both have a copy, so we can work through it together. We both love it. Its practical, easy to understand and non-judgemental e.g. I am a vegan and my friend is a carnivour and the book is perfect for both of us as it is so inclusive. Personally I dont like the use of the word 'thin' in the subtitle, I want a healthy body and I dont need to lose weight, but I did want to use Taoist principles to be healthy and I am improving my health with this book and Dr Chang's book on Internal Exercises. Some information is repeated in both books, but thats okay, it bears repeating.

We're travelers, just like you.
This book was born from starvation, immobility, and grooming emergencies - my own personal experiences when I arrived in China without a phrase book. Few people in China speak English, and my guidebook just didn't cut it; using it to communicate in every day situations was impractical and frustrating. But with time, encounters with the occasional English-speaking individual, and a talent for sketching pictures, I ended up with a stack of paper scraps that got me through the days. And thus, Me No Speak (and this book) was born.

Indispensable tool for China

I spent a month in China, mostly in rural locations, and this was invaluable. From buying train tickets, to making sure I only ate vegetarian meals, I'm not sure what I would've done without it. Pinyin sucks, and outside the big cities, there aren't many people who speak much English. The size of the book makes it easy to carry, and its organization makes it easy to use.

Helpful tool while traveling

My Mandarin is conversational, at best. So when I stumble on details (such as which vegetables to order), I pull this out and point to it. My version has English and Chinese characters, which helps communicate my point across even better. The only thing I wish it had was pinyin. The pinyin would have helped jogged my memory of some of the words and phrases and at least give me an attempt on my own! This was definitely came in handy when I went to rural areas where the local dialect was completely incomprehensible to me.
But for those who are attempting independent travel in China, especially the more rural areas, and do not know Mandarin (or even the local dialect), this book is highly recommended.

Practicle book for paperbased tourists in China

Travelling in China relying solely on English will greatly limit the experiences you can have there.

In this regard, the book is very functional and is a good investment for any trip longer than a week:
small size means you'll take the book with you and the content covers many common tourist situations, letting you explore where you otherwise couldn't.

That said, smartphones offer similar functionality when coupled with internet access on-the-go (image search or dictionary apps).
Also, I only recommend this for people staying in China for a short time, as the book has no PinYin to assist Mandarin learners in their pronunciation.
Lastly, "Me No Speak" is a somewhat demeaning title and not the greatest foreign policy for Americans going abroad.

A Good Introduction to Photography for Beginners

Blake's first e-book on high dynamic range photography, to a large extent, mirrored the content that he posts on his everydayhdr.com website. In this second e-book, he takes a step back from the post-processing side of image capture and (instead) talks through the more elementary nuts and bolts of photography--composition, exposure, how a camera works, how to deal with lighting. For those people that are just starting out with their first dSLR and who might be intimidated by either the owner's manual that came with the camera or the complexity of the camera itself, this book can a useful way to de-mystify their camera and to talk about somewhat complicated concepts--such as metering--in plain, accessible English with several real life examples to illustrate the concept. It's not so much a replacement for the owner's manual (since Blake points out that the owner's manual is important since it's specific to a camera) as it is a supplement to it.

Some minor quibbles: I read the book on a 7 inch Google Nexus tablet, and because of the smaller screen size (compared to a computer monitor, for example), some of the photographic examples were too small to be of much use, particularly when it comes to dealing with focusing or noise. On a seven inch tablet, the amount of noise on an images taken with a low ISO setting, for example, looks about the same as the amount of noise at a high ISO setting. An example at 100% crop might help in this instance. Reading the book on a larger screen would also help.

Finally, the section on post-processing is helpful insofar as it gets beginners starting to think about how to treat their out-of-camera images as a starting point rather than an end result. However, it is (by necessity) quite brief and, for those readers that are simply starting to figure out their camera, it introduces concepts without providing the simple step-by-step instructions that readers at an introductory level would require in order to put these concepts to practical use.

Again, in closing, I want to emphasize that these criticisms are minor. For the most part, this book can be a very valuable resource to new dSLR photographers.

√ Post-Processing Software is Absolutely Essential!

This is a thorough introduction to using your digital SLR camera. There are tons of useful tips, like the one in the title above. I had no idea that one should be using post-processing software. The author gives an entire chapter to it (Chapter 11), and says, "I will not even show my wife my pictures until I have taken them to the next level with my post processing software."

It wasn't about the money. It was about having my own space, brand new, that no one else had lived in or done things in. A place without a past so I could create my own future there. Of course I picked Perth. After so much time away, I wanted to go home. With a new name, a new career and a whole new life...but it was home. Someone else's afterlife...haunting the place where I'd nearly died. It was fitting. Every time I looked at St Elsie's Hospital next door, I'd remember my time there as a patient and hopefully have more sympathy for my patients. Given they were probably on their last legs after their last encounter with me, it'd be an act of mercy to put them out of their misery. Euthanasia, even, though that wasn't legal in Western Australia.

You Can Conquer Demons, But Do They Disappear?

*I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review (and because I begged; I was too impatient to wait.)

From the very first when I was introduced to Nathan and Caitlin I was sucked in. With Nightmares, I was unsure despite my intrigue as to whether or not I liked the book. With Necessary Evil, I was firmly and surely hooked. Afterlife wrapped everything up so amazingly well. Once again, Demelza delivers an extraordinary read that grips the senses and climbs into the reader's mind. There is no escaping the story of Nathan and Caitlin. If ever two people could be more broken, more haunted, more tormented by life and the deck fate has dealt them then I do not know of them. You will not be able to get these characters out of your head. Do NOT read this book without first reading the two preceding books in the series. To both understand and receive the full impact of this third book it is a must that you read the first two. Demelza does not spoon feed you information, instead, she allows the reader to use their own mind and thought process to pin together certain aspects of the story. But, she does wrap the entire series up completely.

Because I am such an avid fan of Nathan and Caitlin, I do, however, hope she at some point plans to maybe revisit these two. Demons may be conquered but that does not mean they disappear completely. I would love to see Nathan and Caitlin a few years down the road from when this one ends.

Book three and still going strong

I've followed this series from the original Nightmares, the Necessary Evils and now this fun little piece. The characters are organic, gritty, and above all, broken. Forget knights in shining armour and damsels in distress, in this series, everyone has a past, and even the greatest intentions can lead to hell.

Caitlin's back, but now she has a different name, someone else's life, but how will she handle going back to where it all began, where the Nightmares started, and how will Nathan deal with her return.

As a native of Perth, this series always makes me equal parts nostalgic and terrified. It's rare for a series to be set where you live, especially for someone from Perth, so to hear the names of place you grew up in, to read about places where you work, and see all the horrors that could be going on, it adds a certain flair to an otherwise sleeply little city :P

Psychologically frightening

A great ending to this psychologically frightening trilogy. The AFTERLIFE OF ALANNA MILLER is every bit the page turner of the first two books of this series. This story, which delves into dark reaches of the human psyche, is expertly unfolded by Ms. Carlton like a perfectly tuned rose, albeit a dark one. To say more would risk giving away the delicate twists and turns of this fast-paced plot. It's best to pick this one up when you have ample time to read, because you won't be able to put it down.

About the Author

Jeff Doyle, CCIE No. 1919, is a professional services engineer and IPv6 solutions manager. Specializing in IP routing protocols, MPLS, and IPv6, Jeff has designed or assisted in the design of large-scale carrier and services provider networks in North America, Europe, and Asia.

Jennifer Carroll, CCIE No. 1402, is an indepedent network consultant in Redmond, WA. She has designed and implemented many TCP/IP networks and has developed and taught a variety of courses on routing protocols and Cisco routers.

5 stars from what I have read so far. I should have gotten this book sooner!

Full disclosure, I haven't finished the book yet. I have read the Sybex CCNA books, Cisco CCNP related books and other books from Cisco Press on other topics, Security, VOIP etc. For an introduction to Cisco, the Sybex CCNA Study Guide by Todd Lammle I think is great, but I really needed something that would dig in and explain routing protocols in depth. Most of Cisco Press puts me to sleep after a few pages, but on the shelf or desk of just about every network engineer I work with is a copy of Routing TCP/IP, Volume 1 (1st Edition). That title seemed to be the defacto standard for all network engineers, and even some engineers that weren't network engineers, so I decided to pick up a copy only to be surprised that it had been updated with a second edition. I figured I'd start at the beginning, when a situation at work dictated that I jump into some specific routing protocols. I found that this book was what I was hoping it'd be. The authors explain things in such a way that the light bulb went off on the inner workings of the protocol. I found I was getting the in-depth knowledge I needed, not just a gloss over and how to configure the protocol at a basic level. The authors somehow manage to provide a wealth of information, without it just looking like they dumped the Cisco Whitepages on a page. It's definitely a technical book, but the information is provided in such a manner that you feel engaged and want to keep reading more. I'm currently going over OSPF, and there are approximately 80+ pages just going over the details of OSPF before the authors even get into how to configure OSPF. And that's just OSPFv2. There is a separate chapter for OSPfv3. It's a hefty book at approximately 800 pages, but the authors are really presenting a lot of material in a human readable format. Translation, you don't have to be a Uber Network Engineer to understand this book. To that I attribute the skill of the authors in relaying the information. I intend the read the full book, but for now I specifically need to concentrate on OSPF and BGP. (BGP is going to be covered in the soon to be released Routing TCP/IP, Volume 2 (2nd Edition) by the same authors and I'll be picking up as soon as it's out. If you are beyond CCNA level or want to move beyond CCNA level, get this book. It's a great for learning and will be a great reference or study guide for any of the routing exams. You won't regret this book.

Best IP Routing Protocol out there!

Well considering EIGRP does more than just IP my title is wrong, but there isn't I can say about this book that hasn't been said already. I've worked with pretty heavily with every routing protocol jumping in and out of customer networks and I really believe this book helped me the most. Each chapter goes over protocol is great detail everything from the forming adjacency, to metric calculations, and even packet formats. You might thing packet formats are unnecessary but when your running tcpdump to troubleshoot an OSPF adjancency you'll be happy you understand what your looking at.

This is a book I've read over and over, and one I constantly refer back. I can say with certainty this is one book I don't mind paying for twice. I bought it for my kindle as well as the physical book since it's that good.

Great for CCNA

This book is great for CCNA prep. It is NOT for easy glossing over of concepts. You really need to be interacting with equipment (or a good simulator) to appreciate the information here. There is a lot that is uncovered and as you learn more, you'll find yourself going back to those same sections and learning more that you didn't appreciate the first (or second) time around.

The book is big, but not wasteful. I hate seeing other books that brag about some number of pages (usually 1000 is the magic mark) only to find half of it is huge table of contents, summary after summary, or ridiculously large indexes. Not that kind of wasted space here.

My only caveat is the rather large section on IS-IS. This could be seen as a waste for those not using it. I wouldn't be surprised if this section is much smaller in future editions.

If you're going for in-depth knowledge for CCNA (not just enough to pass the exam, but understanding concepts), this book is a keeper.
