Leon's Life Lesson

Leon the Lion is a beautifully illustrated and written book for small children. In this book Leon learns the valuable lesson that getting everything you want at the expense of others will not make you happy. He learns that it's ok to want to be the best you can be, but be careful, because you may not realize how much what you do and say can affect the world and those around you. A great book to get children to think and ask questions. I am a preschool teacher and will enjoy sharing this book with my class.

OK book, but if you are in the Research area, then get it!

The book material is overall good, but it goes very often, if not full pages, of research examples and some "possible" interactions or "studies are investigating mechanisms of action', that it looses its main purpose; to teach you the core characteristics of the drugs and implications in anesthesia, evidence based, information.
If you are doing Research in the Pharmacology & Physiology in Anesthesia, then is a book I would recommend. If you are becoming a Anesthesiologist or Nurse Anesthetist, then look for another book, or get the handbook version of this book. The handbook version is more straight to the point without all the stories and "possible", "one scenario found..." "data has been collecting..." "theories are still under investigation" and any other paragraph of that kind will not be part of the Handbook, Straight forward info.

Dense and Lacking Organization

With material this detailed and, at times, difficult, a different organization would be helpful. This text didn't seem to flow or have discernible sections for review. There were no chapter summaries or review questions. There is a companion handbook that some of my classmates found to help flesh out key information; however, at this cost, I shouldn't need another text to augment my learning. Not even close to my favorite anesthesia text.

About the Author
Joan R. Kaplowitz retired from her librarian position at UCLA in 2007. She remains active in the profession through her publications, her professional development workshops for librarians, and by continuing to teach the graduate information literacy instruction course in the Information Studies department at UCLA. Dr. Kaplowitz was also a member of the faculty development team for the Association of College and Research Libraries’ Institute for Information Literacy’s Immersion Program, and taught in six of the programs between 1999 and 2004. Her many publications include Transforming Information Literacy Instruction Using Learner-Centered Teaching, the award-winning Information Literacy Instruction: Theory and Practice, (co-authored with Esther Grassian), and the “Information Literacy Instruction” section the Encyclopedia of Library and Information Science (also co-authored with Ms. Grassian).

Wonderful art collection from Pixiv

[[VIDEOID:moE74FSHXF1CCG]]Pixiv is one of Japan's largest art community. It's somewhat like deviantART but their website looks totally different.

Pixiv have their own quarterly magazines and occasionally also publish art book collections.

Pixiv Almanac Volume 1 is the English edition of the original Japanese edition Pixiv nenkan 2010 Official Book. There is actually a 2009 edition but for some reason, the 2010 edition was chosen to be the volume 1 in English.

This paperback is 258 pages as compared to the 272 pages for the Japanese edition. I'm not sure if anything significant is missing.

There are almost close to 200 artists featured in the book. It's mainly character art in different anime, manga and CG style. The variety is great except that most are female characters. Hatsune Miku seems like the most popular character and there are many pieces with her. There's only a handful of background art. Most illustrations are quite elaborate and detailed, the simplified anime style is actually rare.

Each artist has only 1 to 2 pages of work featured. Some of them are printed smaller than quarter page size which makes it difficult to look at the details. The good thing is the artists' websites are provided so you can check out more of their art online.

I'm impressed by the quality of submissions. This book really makes me wonder why deviantART don't have anything similar.

It's a great book for those who like Japanese character art.

Would have been better with half the artists / larger art

As with any collection of artwork (or art books in general) the main draw is and always will be the art; But what happens when the art is so small that you have to squint in order to make out any discernible details? Granted, I have better than average near-sightedness, and even I had trouble appreciating the work that was put into many of the pieces collected in this book. They were just too small, which admittedly, has now become a pet peeve of mine; why include an artist's work if it is too miniscule to view properly? The book gets a higher rating based on the sheer number of artist's featured, but really, it could have done with limiting the number of them to half of what was ultimately used and give the "best-of-the-best" full page spreads. Some of the work is so amazing, that they are severely gimped by taking up less than 10% of the page.
Also, I understand that Japan has a fascination with Hatsune Miku and Vocaloid, but there were so many images of Miku throughout the book, you have to wonder whose idea it was to showcase that much fanart based on one character. It is the equivalent of having a calendar of the same model in different poses; some people will be into it, but as for me, I like variety. I have nothing against Vocaloid, but so many images of the same design is overkill and should have been saved for a book devoted to said character. What's wrong with releasing a collection devoted to Kinu/Vocaloid? That being said, if you don't mind that at times up to 8 images are crammed onto a page not much larger than standard paper size (8.5"X 11"), you will be treated to some awesome work by some truly talented individuals. I just feel as if their work deserves much better treatment.

Not My Favorite Pixiv Book, But You Can't Always Please Everyone

Personally, I found the selections in here to be on the disappointing side compared to the other Pixiv books released in Japan, but that's just my personal tase. I do, however, think that it is a good start for Pixiv art books in English. I was a bit surprised to find that it does not have a dust jacket like the books from Japan, but it does use high-quality, glossy paper (which does a very good job of reflecting light). Honestly, it's hard to review an art book without factoring in personal taste. The selections in here will appeal to some people, but for others, they will not. The construction of the book itself is very well done.

Solid thermo book w/ some application

This book is well written and explains thermo science in detail. Not only does this book teach the theory; it teaches how to apply the theory in the design of real chemical systems. This book is tough sleding...although not as tough as Sandler's book on thermo, which is also, in my opinion, and better book. I
My only real dislike of this book is the formating...I read this book for long hours at a time in my thermo class (it was one of three books required for the course) and I must say the text and page layout of the book really bothered me.

He possesses over 20 years of research and teaching experience gained from his service at the National Centre for Biological Sciences, Bangalore, India; Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, USA; Reliance Life Sciences, Mumbai, India; and Manipal University, Dubai, UAE―where he is currently a professor and chairperson of the School of Life Sciences (previously known as the Department of Biotechnology). Widely published, he has been associated with the International Brain Research Organization, France and Society for Neuroscience, USA. A popular conference presenter, Dr. Khan specializes in neuroscience, pharmacology, and stem cell biotechnology―in which he holds two US patents.
