One of the 20th Century Classics in Linguistics

I have worked as a computational linguist for over 20 years now. And even while I was still in grad school, I grew weary of exceedingly complicated theoretical frameworks whose longevity was questionable, in part because in my experience, they have a tendency to lead to politics. But mostly this is true because I find them of marginal utility when I actually want to build something which is useful on my computer.

This book is exceedingly useful for building things on a computer... at least I have found it so.

So in my humble opinion, this book ranks with and beyond many of the what are thought of as the great works of linguistics, like, you know, Cours, Syntactic Structures, Bloomfield's and Sapir's Language, Jakobson's Kindersprache, and Humboldt's writings, which I regard very highly. And yes, I have read them all, too many times in some cases. The reason I rate this work so highly is that it consists of substantive generalizations, which by their nature must stand the test of time. Nor are they trivial generalizations.

That doesn't mean it's excessively difficult to understand what the generalizations are once you get into it. I would say that anyone who knows what a transitive verb is and who knows the difference between verbal tense and aspect would be able to follow this text if they were motivated. And if you are into text processing of any sort on a computer, like data mining or translation memory or full text retrieval, there's very good reason to be motivated to use this book.

Still there's a reason why nobody made this classification before Levin. You have to know what to look for. You have to resist the temptation to go into your head and start confusing the map with the territory. I regard this as a major problem for theoretical linguists, not only in modern times, but also historically.

The book proves that there is a relationship between the meaning of a verb and the syntactic structures that it can enter into. At the time the book was written, this was a much debated topic in the linguistics world, and I suspect that it is primarily the influence of this book which has largely laid that debate to rest. For example, one class she distinguishes (to choose completely at random) is verbs of substance emission. You can say both:

Substance/Source Alternation:

Heat radiates from the sun.

The sun radiates heat.

However, you cannot say:

The boy eats from the plate.

The plate eats the boy.

In the first half of the book, Levin distinguishes perhaps 70 syntactic alternations like this organized into 8 supercategories. In the second half, she inverts the classification. She distinguishes perhaps 150 semantic verb classes and then lists the syntactic alternations that characterize them.

For example, the Separate Verbs in English are: decouple, differentiate, disconnect, disentangle, etc. And these can undergo the transitive and intransitive Simple Reciprocal Alternations (which she defines in the first section), the Causative/Inchoative Alternation (also defined in section I) and so on.

And that's the essence of it. It is a reference work which covers about 3000 verbs in common English usage.

What Doesn't Kill You

I'm pretending hunkosaurus Franco didn't write this. Moving on.

This is the stuff of every Creative Writing class you took as an undergrad. It's all Holden Caulfield crabby and Bret Easton Ellis name-droppy; gruesome with those obnoxious one-liner sentences that are meant to be profound in their brevity. The racial issues are slapped on strangely, and the tone is mushy oatmeal bland. "Killing Animals" was worth reading, but even then, it feels like Ellis fan fiction.

Now I'm pretending Franco did write them. Look my man, you have many rich and successful friends. Many of whom are writers who like you because you're a cool dude. You're also a hunk. This is working against you. If my mom wrote a book called "imma Real Gud Mama", I'd tell her she was the next Faulkner.

Get some unbiased advice, sweetheart. And call me.

Franco is unique, but in a totally typical way

James Franco does not want to be considered an actor. He wants to be considered a polymath and an "artist." He is enrolled in something like six highly prestigious graduate programs, including one for filmmaking, one for fiction, one for poetry, one for design, one for creative writing, and a couple for English literature. You would think this would qualify him to write a book.

But there's a problem. The planet's brightest students have to crawl over broken glass to complete one of these graduate programs. How is it possible that Franco can do six at the same time? There are several possibilities. Maybe Franco really is the second coming of Leonardo da Vinci. But here's a line from one of his short stories: "The building is beige, but the shadows make it shadow-color." So maybe not.

It's more likely that Franco is riding some sort of grotesque wave of snowballing prestige, one that attempts to shield him from his quite evident averageness. It's been said that his classmates feel protective of him. In other words, they like him, they're charmed by him, they're pleased to have him in their midst, and they want to shield him from the fact that he's in a million miles over his head.

Franco is unique, but in a totally typical way. He is the cartoonish example of the high-achieving young person who takes 15 AP classes and does 20 extracurriculars in order to look impressive and gain status and admission and acceptance. But it isn't possible to do that many things with any sort of skill or competence. The result is a book that is so vapid and soulless and contrived as to be hard to look at.

Fish Bowl now

I came across the title PALO ALTO and thought it interesting since I reluctantly moved there as an early teenager and thankfully got out of there as soon as I graduated high school. When I realized it was written by James Franco, who, personally, I don't like or dislike, I was looking forward to a good read. Unfortunately, it wasn't a good read. It wasn't even an ok read. It was the same character pretending to be different characters telling different stories with the same tone and same language. It got quite boring and pointless after the 4th story. The only intriguing thing to me was that there was a lot of name dropping of places and streets in and around Palo Alto. Oh yeah, I remember the Bat Cave! Though I thought it was "The Path" where you could sneak a smoke (and catch your teacher too). I'm just a few years older than Franco and I certainly didn't experience teenage debauchery to this extent.

Palo Alto is a super wealthy and super conservative suburb full of doctors and Stanford professors. Most of the houses are enormous and expensive, half the cars are Mercedes, and the schools are exceptional because the city is loaded. A lot of teenagers became bored of being well to do and having status and high educational expectations to live up to. This didn't come across much at all in the book. These characters just seemed like average, stupid, overly sexed teenagers.

Aside from the location references, why was it even called Palo Alto?

And he argues, in opposition to Bruno Zevi, that the conflict between proclassical and anticlassical concepts and ideas is always present in Mies' work, a dualism of concepts that Mies followed in all his country houses and villas of the 1920s.

Of the many publications on Ludwig Mies van der Rohe to appear shortly following the centennial of his birth, Fritz Neumeyer's "The Artless Word" remains, together with Franz Schulze's excellent biography on Mies, the most insightful analysis of the development of the architect's thought. It is truly a refreshing ground-breaking book. At a time when much architecture seeks to distinguish itself through overwrought or superficial detail, this exploration of the critical connection between philosophy and form in Mie's work is a particularly enjoyable reminder of his return to the fundamentals of building.

As the first comprehensive compilation of Mies's writings to be underscored by a philosophical analysis that explores their relationship to his architecture, The Artless Word is the most thorough presentation of Mie's theoretical legacy. By clarifying the architect's philosophical background, Neumeyer, professor of Architectural Theory at the Technical University, Berlin, brings a new perspective on Mies's oscillation between proclassicism and anticlassicism, as well as on the tension between structural determinism and spiritual concerns in his work. He also addresses the development and continuity of key architectural themes throughout Mies's career.

Neumeyer attends to such conflicting influences as Catholicism, Plato, Hegel, and Nietzsche on the development of Mies's architecture. Here, Neumeyer stresses the importance of Mies's relationship with his first independent client, the philosopher and Neitzsche scholar Alois Riehl, who became a philosophical mentor and with whom Mies remained friends until Riehl's death in 1924. European artistic culture at the turn of the century was strongly influenced by the Nietzschean precept of aesthetic salvation, with art as the "reflection of the will." (Le Corbusier was also strongly affected by the work of the philosopher; as was Peter Behrens, "the architect of Zarathustra," with whom Le Corbusier, Walter Gropius, and Mies apprenticed. Mies later came to reject Behrens's work as too formalist and lacking in "real ideas.") Riehl's philosophy tempered Nietzsche's stress on autonomous will with service to a deeper metaphysical order-the "ancient Good" of which Riehl considered the new "Good" a mere transformation. Mies's early Catholic training in Aachen had already instilled in him the sense of a deeper significance existing beneath surface appearance, thus making him sensitive to Riehl's merging of neoplatonic metaphysics with Nietzschean philosophy.

Mies's amalgam of diverse, seemingly conflicting sources in his architecture, and his emphasis on ancient principle, have strong similarities to Riehl's synthesis of divergent philosophical currents. Neumeyer cites a broad scope of original source material, which provides fascinating parallels to Mies's architecture. Here it is interesting to compare the atheist Nietzsche with the Catholic religious philosopher and architect Rudolf Schwarz. Nietzsche, in the 1887 book, "The Gay Science," said: "One day, and probably soon, we need some recognition of what above all is lacking in our big cities: quiet and wide, expansive places for reflection. Places with high-ceilinged cloisters...where no shouting or noise of carriages can reach...buildings and sited that would altogether give expression to the sublimity of thoughtfulness and of stepping aside."

In a 1928 letter to Romano Guardini, Schwarz wrote: "Once more, in a very modest way, I remark that the idea of the castle as a series of large, pure, and almost empty rooms was my very own at a time when architects were not aware of it (most of them do not even know it today) and coziness was trump in the castle. I had to take a thorough thrashing on account of my empty chapel."

Schwarz, who claimed the idea of the large, pure, virtually empty space as his own, seemed unaware of Nietzsche's earlier plea for such space. Schwarz stressed the spiritual benefits of "free movement is space, the most beautiful and exhilarating result of technology." Mies later embarked on a process of emptying space, notable in such works as the Farnsworth House in 1945 and Crown Hall in 1950. Neumeyer traces the influence of Guardini's and Schwarz's thinking-the placement of spiritual concerns before materialism-on the reorientation of Mies's thinking. Thus, Mies tempered his Nietzsche/Behrens-influenced conception of "the building art is the spatially apprehended will of the epoch, nothing else" and began, in the late twenties, to react to mechanistic/functionalist doctrines and to emphasize the spiritual decisions connected with buildings: "The building art is always the spatial expression of spiritual decisions."

Also noteworthy here is Thomas Beeby's fascinating exposition of certain parallels between Mies, Schwarz, and American Protestant thought, in his essay, "When the Sacred Journey Ends," published in Thresholds, 1982. Until the publication of "The Artless Word, this essay was a completely anomalous interpretation of Mies's work.

The Artless Word is richly and intelligently illustrated. It also carries a substantial appendix of all of Mies's essential manifestos, notebooks, texts, and lectures (published and unpublished), including many that have not before appeared in English translation. (The 800 volumes from Mies's library that form the basis for much of the original research for this book are in the collection of the University of Illinois at Chicago.)

Until Schulze's biography and this book, the philosophical background of Mies's writings and thinking had been left largely unexplored. Particularly when compared with the quantity and scope of publications on Le Corbusier, Mies's work had previously encouraged relatively little original interpretation and analysis. The author blamed the fairly routine treatment Mies's work had frequently received on the example set by Philip Johnson's initial monograph, which established a pattern for most subsequent writings on Mies. These, Neumeyer notes, played down internal contradictions, the tensions in his work between classicism and neoplasticism, and primarily treated his earlier work as preparatory for his later mature American work. While Mies's more well-known writings have been frequently appended, as in Johnson's example, they are generally left as self-explanatory. Johnson, Neumeyer notes, further encouraged this lack of analysis by insisting that Mies did not read and that, at the time of his emigration from Germany, he had "only three books." In marked contrast, Mies claimed to own 3,000 books at this time. Neumeyer's study of Mies's excerpt-filled notebooks, and his library with its frequent underlining and marginalia, reveal Mies's true autodidactic intellectual tenacity and belies Johnson's assertion. No doubt this lack of analysis is also due in part to Mies's ostensible discounting of architectural theory in favor of building, as well as to the deceptive clarity of his work. (Mies's laconic "Don't talk, build" statements have all the verve of a Chicago aldermanic proclamation; but as Neumeyer shows, there is far more philosophical substance here than is readily apparent.)

This book has particular relevance in Chicago, of course. Since the Great Chicago Fire, German architecture has continually influenced and renewed the work of Chicago architects. German architects began pouring into the Midwest in the 1850's. The work of Karl Friedrich Schinkel and the architects of the Berlin school influenced Chicago's architectural theory and design early, contributing to the development of Chicago Modernism, as reflected in the work of such Chicago architects of German descent as the Edward and Frederick Baumann, John Mills Van Osdel, Dankmar Adler, and Richard Schmidt, and in the Prairie School and First Chicago School. These latter developments in turn directly affected the course of German, Dutch, and Austrian architecture, most notably through the neoplasticist movement, Gropius, Mies, and Frank Lloyd Wright's influence on Berlage and Wagner. These currents then returned to Chicago, in the form of Mies, to again have a profound impact on the mid-20th century course of Chicago architecture. Josef Paul Kleihues's design for the Museum of Contemporary Art and Helmut Jahn's work in Chicago and Germany are examples of this perennial cross-pollination. The development of Chicago and German Modernism are inextricably linked.

Particularly from the standpoint of Chicago's architectural culture, and in light of continuing debates over increasingly stylistic, formal approaches to architecture, The Artless Word is fascinating as well as refreshing. Mies's work looks better all the time.

Brianna Baker is an actress, improviser, writer, and lover of cheese who lives in Los Angeles, California. Brianna graduated from Illinois Wesleyan University. Her autobiographical one-woman show Bede, about her blissfully ignorant childhood as a biracial tomboy, was named one of the Best Comedy Shows by Timeout Chicago. The exchanges are written in brilliant, edgy language that feels like NOW

I’m not in the habit of reading teen fiction, but a friend put me on to Little White Lies, by Brianna Baker and F. Bowman Hastie III (Soho Press). It’s a vivid Twenty-first Century version of what in the Eighteenth Century was called an epistolary novel. It consists of exchanges between a seventeen year old African-American teenager and a middle aged White guy who become her collaborator on a blog written for teenagers, which become an instant success and leads to media offers. But the heroine Coretta has a secret she can’t reveal: much of the blog is actually written by Karl, her ghostwriter. Complications ensue. The exchanges are written in brilliant, edgy language that feels like NOW. It uses multiple fonts and graphic elements to reflect the different media in which the characters communicate about life and popular culture. On the way they say the smartest things I’ve ever read about Beyonc� and Kanye West. I loved this book.

I'm really amazed at all the negative reaction to this book

I'm really amazed at all the negative reaction to this book. It's far better than most of the YA stuff I read. The book's premise hooked me right from the beginning. I found the voice of both characters totally believable, the combination of a Black teen and White ghostwriter approaching middle age was unusual, and the way in which they came across each other reminded me of all sorts of creative alliances I know about. I found the New Yorkers to be just like the middle class New Yorkers I know. I liked them fine -- they're interesting and also shallow, observant and also self-obsessed, smart and also blind to things they don't want to deal with. There was a lot to identify with here.
What I really liked about the book was watching these essentially self centered characters struggle with creativity, fame, and secrets. They point to some of our societal challenges, including the ability to get to fast, anonymous fame that can easily run off with your personality. A great first collaboration that I hope to see more of.

Very timely, fun, raucous read

I read through Little White Lies in one night. Like the movie "Grizzly Man," I began the book with a basic idea of what was going to happen, but not how.

The pace of the book, is kind of dizzying, but it works for the story: it mirrors the crazy speed at which someone can become a viral Internet sensation overnight, We're thrust into the life of Coretta, a precocious, stunningly smart and motivated Black teenager in her last year of high school. She has somewhat conservative but supportive parents who drive her to be a high achiever at her school.

One day, she gets annoyed at some of their remarks at the breakfast table, fires off a blog post in reaction and goes to school. Through her well-meaning but clumsy best friend, she finds out that her blog post has gone viral. Coretta writes and few more posts and in a week or so, she has tens of thousands of followers. In the meantime, her boyfriend's parents, who sit on the board a large media company, take a shine to Coretta's blog and forward it to the heads of the media company, who reach out to Coretta for development for a TV show.

All of this, in the span of just days, has sent Coretta into a tailspin as she tries to manage her normal teenage life: school, boyfriend, school activities, trying to get into a good college. At this point, she is about to lose it, when Karl enters the picture.

Karl is a snarky early 40s white professional ghostwriter who has done a bunch of corporate ghostwriting as well as having successfully managed several social media accounts of prominent people. Far from a typical PR person, he's a eccentric who happened to go through adolescence in the 90s as a hip hop head and has all the amazing and fraught tendencies that one might imagine as a 14 year old whose immersion into Black American culture is Public Enemy, Native Tongues, etc.

Coretta's best friend, seeing the strain that being an Internet celebrity is placing on Coretta, arranges, through her parents, for Coretta and Karl to discuss working together, with Karl as a ghostwriter. Although somewhat apprehensive, Coretta agrees. Things get off to a good start, with a fairly harmonious working relationship, and Karl having a fairly good grip on the parameters of his engagement. When he writes a piece about Beyonce that far exceeds any of the posts that Coretta has written on her own, and Coretta locks in a TV deal with her as the star, things begin to unravel to the point that Coretta reveals that she is no longer the sole writer of the blog.

There's a lot more in there, but those are the bizarre and juicy suprises and twists that make the book worth reading.

I enjoyed the two voices in dialogue: Ms. Brown creates a convincing Coretta, a bold, opinionated and articulate high school student, while Mr. Hastie creates a clever foil of Karl, a liberal, cynical 41 year old journeyman social media guru/stoner with Black Power tendencies.

The book takes the form of chapters written in each character's voice, as well as Gchats and text messages between them that happen in the book. While this is unconventional and a little jarring at first, it adds to the authenticity of the book and the pacing...the Internet never sleeps, and because it doesn't, it makes it hard for us to do so.

This book is worth reading if you're interested in: 1) the social media and viral video phenomenon 2) adolescents becoming politicized and using the Internet as a platform for social justice 3) the ability of large media corporations to quickly co-opt organic content (writing, videos, etc) on the Internet and put their stamp on it. 4) novels with multiple authors and multiple voices in conversation (and tension) with each other

1st edition was good - this book is horrible

It appears to me that Paul Harmon has sold out and his book is completely slanted towards the way the organization/company he works for analyzes business systems. I bought his 1st edition book because it cost only $1 and you can really see a difference. The 1st edition is outdated in many ways, but a way better book. One particular thing I noticed between the two editions: edition 1 page 1 says, "Companies that undertake more extensive business process redesign efforts can typically achieve improvements in excess of 20%" This book replaces that statement on page xxiii Introduction with, "Organizations that undertake more extensive business process redesign efforts frequently achieve improvements in excess of 50%" Hmm, I wonder what changed? Nothing! read it carefully and you see that 20% is replaced by 50% and typically is replaced by frequently. The first edition tells the truth and this book tries very hard to obscure the truth.

This is a very good book for practical BPM

This is a very good book for practical BPM. If you new to BPM and would like to find the way how to walk and start up from the beginning to advance process, this is meet your requirement. By the way the material of how to build BPM CoE is not enough information, but I still give five start because it help me start BPM project and methodology is practical. My company use BPTrends methodology as startup project.

Simply a weak summary of a couple dozen other books, researchers, and case studies

Paul Harmon's writing is exceptionally weak. He switches between first (using both "I" and "we"), second, and third person in seemingly every paragraph. He spends a considerable amount of time in every chapter defending his own views and spends more time talking about the merits of other books and researchers than explaining any concepts. The book is overly redundant and, stripping out the unnecessary garbage that Paul deemed "important", could easily be half the size. For a third edition, there are still numerous spelling and grammar errors. The only real merits to the book are that the language is simple (obviously) which makes it easy to read and there are a lot of diagrams (even if they are not very thoroughly explained).

The field of Cryptology witnessed a revolution in the late seventies. Since then it has been expanded into an important and exciting area of research. Over the last two decades, India neither participated actively nor did it contribute sig� nificantly towards the development in this field. However, recently a number of active research groups engaged in important research and developmental work have crystalized in different parts of India. As a result, their interaction with the international crypto community has become necessary. With this backdrop, it was proposed that a conference on cryptology - INDOCRYPT, be organized for the first time in India. The Indian Statistical Institute was instrumental in hosting this conference. INDOCRYPT has generated a large amount of enthu� siasm amongst the Indians as well as the International crypto communities. An INDOCRYPT steering committee has been formed and the committee has plans to make INDOCRYPT an annual event. For INDOCRYPT 2000, the program committee considered a total of 54 pa� pers and out of these 25 were selected for presentation. The conference program also included two invited lectures by Prof. Adi Shamir and Prof. Eli Biham. These proceedings include the revised versions of the 25 papers accepted by the program committee. These papers were selected from all the submissions based on originality, quality and relevance to the field of Cryptology. Revisions were not checked and the authors bear the full responsibility for the contents of the papers in these proceedings.

The final chapter touches on the ecological problems facing the area due to natural and industrial pollution.
