About the Author

I was born in Finland as Pertti Olavi Jalasjaa, and raised in Ontario, Canada, so I benefited from the best of both cultures. When I was 2 weeks old, I had my first visit to the sauna, a common practice in Finland for newborns.

At age 20, my Dad and I built our first sauna at our new cottage right beside the lake. This was the first sauna either of us had ever built. Soon it became a ritual for Mom to fire up the sauna stove every afternoon on weekends. And it gave a very unique meaning to life, when we had 3 generations of family enjoying the sauna on a rainy Saturday afternoon with frequent dips in the lake. As a Finn would say, just part of the meaning of life!

At age 28, I started to build saunas for customers as a part-time business. Since that humble beginning, my companies have helped over 65,000 sauna customers build their dream sauna, patented some unique designs and preached the sauna gospel to many converts along the way.

I had also written a book, The Art of Sauna Building, which became acclaimed as a best-seller with over 40,000 copies sold to date. It received the ultimate confirmation of its status when a senior vice-president with the largest sauna manufacturing company in the world, Saunatec Oy (listed on the Finnish stock exchange), called it the best book ever written on sauna building . The 9th Edition is now available.

I would like to eat my words...This book is excellent !!!

I mistakenly wrote a review for this fine book based on first impression. First impression that is of the cover. My review was horribly mis-representative and I would like to, if possible, correct my mistake. This text is well written, comprehensive in scope,and easily understandable. It was very helpful and I highly recommend it. I believe it is an excellent value. I apologize, Mr. Jalasjaa, for my negative review of your very fine book. It is indeed reflective of the Art of Sauna Building.

Excellent Sauna Reference Book

Excellent reference with great diagrams and pertinent info. Don't let the goofy cover art fool you, this is a very professional and in-depth builder's guide. If you are planning to build your own sauna, this book is a must-have! Note: This book was priced at $30 when I purchased, not at\ the absurd price that is being charged currently.

Very thorough

Although this book is a bit dated (refers in places to using asbestos as a fire shield!), it is still a very helpful and thorough how-to book. It takes you through every step of building a sauna from basic design through curing the final product. Covers small saunas built into existing houses as well as free-standing structures separate from the main home. Also includes plenty of interesting history, detailed diagrams and layout designs.

Brian Desmond is a consultant focused on Active Directory, Identity Management, and Identity Federation projects for higher education and commercial enterprise customers. He has worked in numerous large-scale enterprise deployments at various Fortune 100 and larger-scale organizations as well as dozens of K-12 and Higher Education institutions and public sector customers across state and local government.

Since March 2003, Brian has been recognized as a Microsoft MVP for Active Directory for contributions to the Microsoft technical communities at large. He is a frequent contributor to various industry leading publications and a frequent speaker at conferences and events around the world.

Joe Richards is a consultant / admin / tool writer who happens to have a secret identity as a Microsoft MVP for Windows Server Directory Services. His specialty is Directory Services but has "minors" in Security and Active Directory programming. By day he works for a large services/consulting/manufacturing company. He takes time to chat with people on listservs and newsgroups, write about stuff he knows, and whips up various fairly useful tools.

Robbie Allen is a technical leader at Cisco Systems, where he has been involved in the deployment of Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, and several network management solutions. This book give a great overview of the inner workings of AD

I purchased this book because I have become responsible for securing a relatively small cloud software companies information systems. While I had a lot of background in network engineering and security, I did not know nearly enough about Active Directory. I knew enough to be dangerous (in other words, I've used the Users and Computers tool a handful of times), but I knew nothing about the inner workings or how you would go about using it to secure my windows servers and desktops. This book give a great overview of the inner workings of AD, how to manage it, best practices, and some security advice. One thing this book does not provide is step-by-step guides on how to configure all the various aspects of AD. it's just not that kind of book. However for the kind of engineer that just needs a nudge in the right direction from an expert before beginning the journey on their own, it's perfect. It definitely helps if you access to an AD ecosystem on which you have some or most administrative privileges so you can at the very least just look at the things the book is describing. I don't know that the book would have been as helpful for me if I didn't have that. This is one of the very few IT books that I've read cover to cover. It's also one of the few I find I reach for fairly often. So if you're like me and you just inherited an Active Directory forest after spending your past life managing Cisco routers and switches, pick up this book.

If you're a geek you will probably find stuff missing from this book or not well enough explained. But given the area it tries to cover and the depth it goes into this is the best book you'll find about AD.
Could have been easily called "the ultimate guide to AD". One of the gems in my tech ebook library collection.

Fifty years after President Dwight D. Eisenhower ordered troops to Little Rock, Arkansas, to enforce a federal court order desegregating the city's Central High School, a leading authority on Eisenhower presents an original and engrossing narrative that places Ike and his civil rights policies in dramatically new light.

Drawing on archival documents neglected by biographers and scholars, including thousands of pages newly available from the Eisenhower Presidential Library, Nichols takes us inside the Oval Office to look over Ike's shoulder as he worked behind the scenes, prior to Brown, to desegregate the District of Columbia and complete the desegregation of the armed forces. We watch as Eisenhower, assisted by his close collaborator, Attorney General Herbert Brownell, Jr., sifted through candidates for federal judgeships and appointed five pro-civil rights justices to the Supreme Court and progressive judges to lower courts. We witness Eisenhower crafting civil rights legislation, deftly building a congressional coalition that passed the first civil rights act in eighty-two years, and maneuvering to avoid a showdown with Orval Faubus, the governor of Arkansas, over desegregation of Little Rock's Central High.

Nichols demonstrates that Eisenhower, though he was a product of his time and its backward racial attitudes, was actually more progressive on civil rights in the 1950s than his predecessor, Harry Truman, and his successors, John F. Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson. Eisenhower was more a man of deeds than of words and preferred quiet action over grandstanding. His cautious public rhetoric -- especially his legalistic response to Brown -- gave a misleading impression that he was not committed to the cause of civil rights. It is a Matter of Justice to read this book...

A friend highly recommended this book. He told me that it gave him high respect for Eisenhower and his Attorney General, Herb Brownell.
Having read quite a bit of Civil Rights history and several biographies of Dwight Eisenhower, I thought I knew the Eisenhower's record on Civil Right. Wrong!
The author David A. Nichols, a history professor, was unknown to me before reading his A Matter of Justice. He did a superb job of providing detailed and extensive notes which gave me as a reader a great respect for the extent of his research and his perserverance in writing this book.

deeds rathger than oratory

David Nichols' work on Eisenhower's support for the cause of civil rights, as the blurbs on the back cover indicate, advances the historical record. Eisenhower's view was that the best way to advance the cause of civil rights was through action rather than oratory. This approach to government was a consistent theme of Eisenhower's modus operandi as reflected in Fred Grenstein's ground breaking work. While Nichols enhances Eisenhower's civil rights record by calling attention both to his actions and his public and private comments, he also acknowledges Eisenhower could have (should have?) used the bully pulpit of the presidency more in support of the first Brown decision and the civil rights movements. Nichols lays much of the blame for southern resistence to Brown I to the Court's timidity in its enforcement decision, Brown II, and claims that Eisenhower also was disappointed in Brown II.

Eisenhower, whatever his motives and modus operandi, can be faulted for failing to recognize that a bully pulpit was needed in the aftermath of Brown I and that his overly legalistic and above the board approach stroked southern resistence. The repercussions of not using stronger rhetoric during his presidency caused ripples which reverberate today. While Eisenhower may have provided leadership, he failed to use all the tools of the presidency, including the bully pulpit, to provide moral leadership.

Ike, a new look

I found this book to be quite educational. It reviews the situation at the time and Ike's past and places his actions in perspective. Neither fawning nor overly flattering, it give a clear view of a decent but conflicted man of the times. The evolution of Ike's moral compass was very well presented. In light of the recent election campaigns, it presents some important history.

Great book, easy read, and answered all my questions

For starters I'm in between a novice and a pro with several hundred thousand photos under my belt and a pretty good knowledge of my (dated) Rebel XTi. After finally realizing my dream of owning an EOS 6D (yeah!) the reality set in that there were a number of features that I didn't have experience with or understand, that I wouldn't master from reading the manual, and that even if I figured it out I'd probably not be utilizing it to the fullest extent. I wanted a book that didn't just repeat the information in the manual, gave insight into the ways a pro would use the feature in real life, and didn't spend time in other areas like photo composition, etc. If this sounds familiar then this is the book for you!

I found David Busch's coverage of the camera and associated features very well organized, logical, and at the appropriate depth. It's a great reminder of things you may already know (e.g. Tv and Av modes) to things you may not have realized (like how the two different focus systems work and their strengths/weaknesses). For instance, I never knew that the focus dots had a vertical, horizontal (or both) orientation but ALAS it immediately explained why I had that hard time focusing on that subject the other day!

This book goes through your EOS 6D from top to bottom, but does it in a logical and intuitive way. His writing style is plain and effective which makes even the most difficult features easy to digest.

I think the best summary was stated somewhere before along these lines: the manual tells you what the features do, but if you want to know when/how to use those features you will need a good book and this is the one!

The book that really opens up capability of Canon EOS 6D

After purchasing my new Canon EOS 6D (WG) and reading the supplied factory user manual, I was not satisfied with the content and details of that manual. So David Busch's Canon 6D Digital SLR photography was the excellent resource to complete the necessary knowledge anyone should have if you want to take advantage of all the technical sophistication this camera can deliver. This is my first full-frame DSLR and the second Canon DSLR that I have been using for the last 10 years (EOS 20D). One thing is for sure, reading the explanations of any controls and buttons in this camera could be very beneficial but you have to use them many times and experience the feel and behavior of this device. I have just started to feel a little more comfortable with 6D after shooting my first 250 exposures outside and inside with my Canon 580EX Speedlite. The only thing I would say that David Busch did not really emphasized the advantage of shooting in RAW format. However, he said that raw images would give you more freedom to do post-processing of your photos. Another thing he never mentioned about Light Room as the most popular photo editing software. He was advising to use Canon EOS Digital software that was included with the camera or just using Adobe Photoshop. When you choose RAW quality of your images, you end up capturing about 22 to 24 MB of data for each file. Yes, you would need larger SD memory cards but I think the benefits of shooting in RAW overweight the additional expense of like 64 GB SDHC card. He is professional sport and events photographer so he usually ends up shooting thousands of images at one session so he uses L-fine JPEG quality that gives him more images per card and he does not want to spend too much time post-processing them. Even when I go to overseas vacation for 2 weeks, the maximum number of images I usually shoot is about 600 to 800. I always try to think and take a little more time before I squeeze that shutter release button to create the best photo I could take. Now it's going to be easy to come up with the creative photos I really want to take. In conclusion, David's book is the must to have combined with many hours of practicing all the modes and custom functions this Canon EOS 6D can give you.

Good Summary

This is the second David Busch book I have purchased, and I think he does a very good job of supplementing the Canon manual. To some extent, perhaps to a large extent, the contents of his books are recycled through many different camera models because he is teaching the same principles of photography over and over again regardless of the specific camera model the book targets. Of course he does adapt it to each specific model as well. Speaking of models, that's not a bad business model! But, nevertheless, among the several different books of the same genre, I believe this is the best one.
