Gorgeous cards--if you're even considering it, buy them now!

I received this box of cards as a Christmas present and was thrilled with how lovely they are. The cards are presented in a lovely vertical box with a hinged lid. There is a colorful folded booklet that explains a bit about the history of the art on the cards and how the selection was curated. The cards are divided into 6 sections of 10 cards each, as follows:
1- Fish
2- Mollusks and Other Animals
3- Insects
4- Reptiles and Amphibians
5- Birds
6- Mammals

I've uploaded the cards so you can see the designs. They range from really odd to strikingly beautiful. The quality of the cardstock is fantastic and sturdy, The cards are divided on back and each card tells the name of the animal on front and the source material. Each of these cards is a gem; they're going to be hard to mail out. I want to keep every single one for myself.

(The only quibble I have at all about this set is so minor I almost didn't mention it, but I wanted to provide a balanced review. The cards are packed firmly in the box and hard to remove. On closer inspection, I discovered a small piece of cardboard at the back that's removable and gives some space for the cards to move more freely and be more accessible.)

Lots of very beautiful illustrations but I just wish they'd brightened up the ...

Lots of very beautiful illustrations but I just wish they'd brightened up the backgrounds a bit more. Most of the cards have muddy backgrounds (yellowed or grayish) upon which the illustration doesn't pop as much as it could. I guess they might have been trying to maintain that antiqued look but for me it's just a bit of a letdown imagining how much more vibrant the cards could have appeared. And some of the cards do have whiter backgrounds, so I wonder why the decision wasn't made to make the set more uniform (and clearly I would have preferred for the uniformity to have been achieved by making all the backgrounds whiter, haha).

But I do really enjoy the set and I love how versatile it is. All you have to do is find out if someone's into birds, fish, insects, etc. and you'll probably have a card they'd really enjoy finding in their mailbox.

Stunning, simply stunning. I'm going to keep a few select ones for myself for their beauty, & matt-frame one as a gift, but almost any one of them would be worthy of being framed & hung for art work. Good, thick cardstock too. A bargain, for the quality you get for the price.

A day of rain brings strange creatures into Ehlert’s world. Formed by wet bits of discarded paper, fall leaves, old socks, feathers, and other debris, they combine in elongated shapes that appear quite fishlike, often with a bottle cap or other round object for the eye. In Ehlert's imagination, these "rain fish" begin to take on lives of their own. “They love to splash in puddles / and dance upon concrete. / They gather in the gutters / and then swish on down the street.” The colloquial, rhyming text provides just enough guidance, drawing readers through the book while allowing them to enjoy the details as well as the overall effect of each picture. Colorful and Creative - Can you and your kids make your own rain fish?

When it rains, you can see lots of "fish" in the items all around us, splashing in puddles on the sidewalk. From this debris, Ehlert has created collage illustrations of fish swimming through all the pages. I loved examining the collages and identifying all the objects, reading the print on the tickets and receipts, etc. So clever!

My children and I totally loved Lois Ehlert's work in "Chicka Chicka, Boom! Boom!" - in fact, it is so worn I am afraid I'll need to buy a new copy when they have kids. This one doesn't captivate in quite the same way because the text is so short and not as bouncy, but it invites more contemplation and that's fine, too. I think this would be great for an art teacher-- I can definitely picture inviting children to create their own "rain fish". (Might be a project for me and my kids, as well!)

This work reminds me that as a writer, I frequently wish I were an illustrator...but while I lack skills for sketching and painting, I like to think I do have a creative eye, so maybe there's hope for me yet. Not all artwork requires setting pen to paper. It's also worth noting that the text in this book is extremely sparse-- generally only one sentence per two page spread, meaning only about 14 sentences in the whole book. If that isn't a daunting task, I'm not sure what is!

Another solid and striking book from a masterful book maker

Rain fish only appear when it rains, coming out of the debris in the gutters. Formed of lost receipts, bottle caps, feathers, socks, leaves and more. They swim down the streets, along the gutters and on the sidewalks. You have to look fast, because they disappear quickly. These are fish who swim off to different seas, unable to be caught by fishermen.

This picture book encourages children to look at debris and discarded items in a different way, seeing forms in them and wonder as well. The book’s text is simple, single lines of text on double page spreads which create rain fish that are larger than life. The end pages feature the various objects not made into fish with the objects labeled at the end of the book. This is a gorgeous book, playful and filled with artistic fun.

As always, the illustrations in Ehlert’s books are the treat. Here she captures the fluidity of fish, their forms and fins with a series of objects. The youngest of children may want to name the objects the fish are made of, making this art very accessible and an opportunity to talk about the illustrations. It is also a great introduction to collages and classes or groups could do their own fish or other animals.

Another solid and striking book from a masterful book maker, this picture book is another winner for Ehlert. Appropriate for ages 2-4.

About the Author
Daniel M. Wegner was the John Lindsley Professor of Psychology in Memory of William James at Harvard University, and recipient of the 2011 Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award of the American Psychological Association, the 2011 William James Fellow Award of the Association for Psychological Science, and the 2011 Distinguished Scientist Award of the Experimental Social Psychology. He is the author of The Illusion of Conscious Will, among other books. He passed away in July 2013.

Kurt Gray is an assistant professor at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, where he leads the Mind Perception and Morality Lab. He received his BSc from the University of Waterloo and his Ph.D. in social psychology from Harvard University. A recipient of the Janet Spence Award for Transformative Early Career Research from the Association for Psychological Science, he lives in Chapel Hill.

A fun-to-read, easy-to-understand introduction to mind perception, morality, and why lifelike robots are not to be trusted. Recommended to anyone with an interest in psychology, particularly those wanting to explore how our impressions and preconceptions of people affect our everyday lives. Great read!

Serious and Seriously Entertaining

Outstanding! Serious books are often difficult to slog through, while entertaining books are often vacuous. The Mind Club is both serious and seriously entertaining! It addresses state of the art research on the psychology of mind perception and morality--I should know, I just got my Ph.D. and do research in this field. And it does so in a fun and lighthearted way characteristic of Wegner's and Gray's writings. Enjoy!

This is a lucid, funny, and insightful book that makes the psychology of moral judgment far less of a muddle. It is a fitting culmination of Daniel Wegner's remarkable career. One of the most creative minds the field of psychology has ever seen. (I never had the pleasure of meeting him.) The book pulls together much of Wegner's work and ends, fittingly, with a discussion of the self and the illusion of free will. It is also very fortunate that Wegner had a wonderful colleague and coauthor in Kurt Gray, who could see this project through to the end. Highly recommended.

During the ten years it took to write the first edition of The Wine Bible and the four years it took to write this second edition, I have often asked myself why wine matters. What is it about wine that I hold so deeply? What is this endless attachment?

I have always known what it is not. It’s not about scoring or competitive analysis, though like any wine pro, I’m game for the next blind tasting. And it’s not about the need to retell what I have learned, though I can lie awake for hours thinking about how to capture a wine in words.

Perhaps it is this: I love wine because it is one of the last true things. In a world digitized to distraction, a world where you can’t get out of your pajamas without your cell phone, wine remains utterly primary. Unrushed. The silent music of nature. For eight thousand years, vines clutching the earth have thrust themselves upward toward the sun and given us juicy berries, and ultimately wine. In every sip taken in the present, we drink in the past—the moment in time when those berries were picked; a moment gone but recaptured—and so vivid that our bond with nature is welded deep.

Wine matters because of this ineluctable connection. Wine and food cradle us in our own communal humanity. Anthropologically, they are the pleasures that carried life forward and sustained us through the sometimes dark days of our own evolution.

Drinking wine then—as small as that action can seem—is both grounding and transformative. It reminds us of other things that matter, too: love, friendship, generosity.

The Wine Bible has taken me a long time to write—in some ways I’ve spent the better part of my last twenty years on it. It has taken this long not because it takes a long time to accumulate the facts, but because it takes a long time to feel a place—culturally, historically, aesthetically.

And so, on my mission to understand the wine regions of the world, I’ve danced the tango (awkwardly) with Argentinian men to try to understand malbec; drunk amarone while eating horsemeat (a tradition) in the Veneto; sipped wine from hairy goatskin bags in northern Greece (much as the ancients would have); and been strapped into a contraption that lowers pickers down into perilously steep German vineyards (an experience that momentarily convinces you your life is over).

I’ve shared wine and cigars with bullfighters in Rioja; ridden through the vineyards of Texas on horseback; eaten octopus and drunk assyrtiko with Greek fishermen in Santorini (considered by some to be the lost Atlantis); and picked tiny oyster shells from among the fossilized sea creatures that make up the moonscape soils of Chablis.

I’ve waltzed among wine barrels with winemakers in Vienna; stomped grapes with Portuguese picking crews until my legs were purple, and worked for weeks with a Mexican harvest crew in California, one of the hardest and most rewarding experiences I’ve ever had.

These encounters brought wine so vividly into my life that I ultimately moved to Napa Valley on the sheer belief that living near vines would touch my heart in ways imaginable and not.

And so it has.

What is the superlative of amazing?

I bought the first edition of this incredible tome in 2015. As an ardent winelover for the past fifty years, I fully appreciate the dedication and passion that went into writing it. But MacNeil didn't just write it, she submitted the chapters to literally dozens of experts in their specialty for review. That is how it took TEN years to write!
How good was it? Good enough to take a two pound book with me to the Basque Country of Spain!
I own more than a dozen wine books, most of which gather dust on my bookshelf...not that one, it is a constant companion!
Imagine, a book that took TEN years to write, TEN years ago, and is still valuable. Wait, isn't that a bible?
If you read the Amazon reviews of it, you will find only two complaints: when will she write a new edition, and the weight. Oh, one more: why nothing on Temecula wines?
Finally, ten years and 4,000 pages of manuscript later, we got our wish...and more, because of all the changes, THE most valuable is the Kindle edition! Portable, quick and easy to search, and dozens of other new features.
As a wine advocate and aficionado who is a blogger and is working on a book project on wine, or more accurately the passion of the people who make them, this is a huge help to me.
I have been asked what wines I would take if I was going to a deserted island. I cannot narrow the list down, but as for what wine book I would take, this is it!
Oh, and even Temecula gets mentioned, as well as upcoming regions like Slovenia!

Yeah! It is finally here!

I'd been looking forward to this new edition of the Wine Bible and it did not disappoint. Great updates and expansive new information. It sits on my coffee table, convenient for quick reads when time permits. That is the beauty of the book. I work in the retail wine industry and this book is necessary. I also recommend it to my regular customers who want to increase their wine knowledge because of the approachable style of the content. Good job, Karen!

A Must Have for Wine Lovers!!!

So after becoming a chef and working in kitchens, catering, private chef, and now a culinary school educator I thought it would be fun to obtain a sommelier degree. Yes, I love to punish myself! I am training for my level two sommelier degree now and working with a "Master Sommelier", and without this book (and many others) I would not be here. This book is a flood of information laid out in a very readable format.

I have multiple books on wine, and wine making as I began to make wines several years ago. I had a first edition copy of this book but at the time it did not help me much in my wine making operation so I sold it. Dumb, I will never sell or give away any food and beverage books again. I now own both copies again, and cannot put them down. A thousand page book is usually a shelf sitter but not this one.

The first 150 pages are loaded with information on varietals, vinification, terroir, tasting, pairing, and a little on the making of as well. Then you hit the chapter on France, WOW, 200 pages of French wines. I guess once you learn there are around 10,000.....yes 10,000 wines worldwide you soon realize you have ALOT to learn. The section on Italy and their 3,300 different varietals is mind blowing but very interesting and informative.

If you want to learn more on this luscious, and beautiful beverage that has been around since 8,000 BC, this is the book to own. As a hobby, collector, maker, or just enthusiast, this is a book for your library. I would have paid double the price for the wealth of information loaded into this easy sized reader. Overwhelming to the beginner, but worth it. Just buy it, you will not be disappointed!
