good text for world geography

I bought this text for a world geography course, and I have to say it's actually a pretty good text. I especially like the online website that goes along with this text. It has a lot of helps to learn the information like flashcards and multiple choice practice questions. There was an interactive map for each section that also quizzed you on the countries, states, and even the physical features of each area. The text itself is well organized, and each chapter is divided into subchapters that focus on each region. This text is a great choice if you want to learn about world geography.

Good textbook

I'm still in the process of reading this textbook, but overall it seems very well organized. The chapters are divided into 'realms' and each chapter then divided into two sections, the first is a quick history of the realm and the second is about each country in its respective realm. Easy reading, though there seemed to be a few....egotistical phrases in the introduction (e.g. something along the lines of the USA is the most formidable country in the world).

This is a light and entertaining book from a word-play genius. What is amazing is the way he weaves so many stories into a tidy, compact little package - almost the size of a pack of cigarettes, as a matter of fact.
This is a story about a tarnished princess, an outlaw bomber with bad teeth, a scene stealing if somewhat undomesticated loyal servant, toads - both real and plastic, an exiled King and his "Oh-Oh, spaghetti-o" Queen, a CIA not-so-secret agent, an outraged Middle Eastern playboy, blackberries, Camels, Ralph Nader, pyramids and aliens from Argon.
What more could you possibly want in a book?
Tom Robbins has a genuine talent for words and puns, and those with active funny bones will be tickled throughout. His casual use of words like "slishy" and phrases like "I have a black belt in haiku" abound, to be discovered with unbridled delight.
This is a book to be enjoyed within one lunar cycle without fear of repercussions.

Kidnapped is a historical fiction adventure novel by the Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson. Written as a "boys' novel" and first published in the magazine Young Folks from May to July 1886, the novel has attracted the praise and admiration of writers as diverse as Henry James, Jorge Luis Borges, and Seamus Heaney. A sequel, Catriona, was published in 1893.
As historical fiction, it is set around 18th-century Scottish events, notably the "Appin Murder", which occurred near Ballachulish in 1752 in the aftermath of the Jacobite Rising. Many of the characters, and one of the principals, Alan Breck Stewart, were real people. The political situation of the time is portrayed from different viewpoints, and the Scottish Highlanders are treated sympathetically.

The Black Arrow tells the story of Richard (Dick) Shelton during the Wars of the Roses: how he becomes a knight, rescues his lady Joanna Sedley, and obtains justice for the murder of his father, Sir Harry Shelton. Outlaws in Tunstall Forest organized by Ellis Duckworth, whose weapon and calling card is a black arrow, cause Dick to suspect that his guardian Sir Daniel Brackley and his retainers are responsible for his father's murder. Dick's suspicions are enough to turn Sir Daniel against him, so he has no recourse but to escape from Sir Daniel and join the outlaws of the Black Arrow against him. This struggle sweeps him up into the greater conflict surrounding them all.

Decent illustrated version tho you'd do better for the money to purchase a collection like Delphi Complete Works of Robert Louis Stevenson (Illustrated) ASIN: B004TU58G8, Stevenson Six Pack ASIN: B018H4146O or The Complete Novels of Robert Louis Stevenson (Illustrated Edition) or ASIN: B00W11SDCI in it's place.

This book was an ok buy for getting two complete tales from a famous writer for the cost of one, together with some illustrations to boot that help set the tone. "Black Arrow" is more of a bonus book for me tho as dialogue was less to my liking, but who hasn't heard of this passage from "Kidnapped" in one form or the other, "I would have given the world to take back what I had said; but a word once spoken, who can recapture it?" I did like this one!

PreS-K-A wintry village inhabited by a variety of unlikely creatures is the setting for this rhyming tale about how the efforts of a humble baker restore the sun to a chilled world. Bellicose bears, argumentative monkeys, a lachrymose pig, and a depressed giraffe are among the distressed animals pictured. It's not until the town's baker, an innovative little dog, bakes a smiling bread in the shape of the sun that the residents have reason to rejoice and hope. As they share in the feast, their bodies as well as their spirits are so lightened that they rise into the sky. There they make such a joyful noise that the long-slumbering sun is awakened. The baker somehow intuits that it wants some of his special loaf and the happy villagers share it with the celestial body. Sunlight is restored to the Earth and returns the next day for the little baker's promised sun bread and buns. A recipe is included. This sunny tale is marred by an uneven rhyme scheme and awkward phrasing. The story also suffers from a certain incongruity and lack of logic as well. Why are tropical animals depicted in such an alien environment? Why does the sun want to eat sun bread? Kleven's characteristically charming folk-art-inspired collages far outshine the text in this instance.

Wonderful Inspiring Book-making and sharing Bread-comfort

This book is just a wonderful story of a solution to unhappiness, frustration, due to a difficult situation. I make bread and have made the bread in this shape so many times and shared it! Each time I shared it, I could feel the love and the expression of thankfulness, peace, comfort, and joy! What wonderful ideas and feelings to have in this world. I did use a different bread recipe, but the concept is still the same, sharing the Sun with all it's cheerfulness, shedding light on everyone and everything, eradicating darkness and gloom, with all of us being reflections of the Sun. Beaming. I use this book to share with others the love of baking bread. We do it in groups, which have included elderly and a 2 yr old with her mother. While mixing the dough, she remarked with a big smile, "Look! Mommy. I'm cookin!" All of our eyes will filled with joy, and a little tear of happiness. Thank you for writing and illustrating this.

A family tradition

This is a delightful story, beautifully illustrated, and my children love it. We have started the tradition of reading this story on the winter solstice and making the sun bread recipe at the back of the book. It isn't the most delicious bread, but it puffs up impressively and it's a fun project for the kids.

Smiles Inside and Out...

Here's another book that I purchased because I loved the cover art. (I wish we had a poster with that illustration on it!) There is something very cheerful about the smiling Sun and a ring of happy animals celebrating it. This is a beautiful, "feel good" book inside and out, in both text and illustration, in message. I was surprised to discover that the back cover had a recipe for Sun Bread, which I am tempted to try--even with my limited cooking abilities! LOL I thought the recipe note was brilliant and ever so funny: "This bread, alas, won't make you fly. But it is heavenly--light and high!" Could happiness be as simple as a warm loaf of good bread? :D

I like the book's message on how one really should take responsibility for one's own happiness as the little baker does in this tale. This book is worth sharing and reading aloud.

I have become a huge fan of Elisa Kleven's work, and I recommend this book as a remedy for rain and / or wintry days, for family time, and for in-school story time. Another great story is "The Lion and the Little Red Bird."

Elementary, dull, and repetitive.

This is an ambitious, yet poorly written monograph. Devitt's overuse of the term "genre" bludgeons the reader, and her assertions of the manner in which genre dictates certain aspects of how we see the world and organize our experiences borders on the obvious. Anyone familiar with the way in which signs and signifying chains are linked together are already familiar with this concept. For those indoctrinated in a Lacanian framework, she waters down the manner in which the symbolic functions by replacing the Law of the Father in the symbolic with genre sets and other subdivisions of how genres are grouped and ordered. Her claim that genre is at the nexus of the individual and the social is perhaps the point I disagree with most. Her concept of the individual is purely hinged upon the social/ public individual as defined in that space; however, she neglects the private, internalize subjectivity which the subject uniquely experiences. While some might claim that blogs, social media pages, and other narratives will fit into genres and thus cover that internalize experience, she neglects the affective investment in language that is inseparable and impossible to convey to another subject. We can read traces of another and individually re-invest in those signs as we have read and assimilated them. While some may assert that that individualized experience escapes this realm of writing, neglecting the relationship between the subject and their relationship to language escapes the area between the thought and the expression. She never deals with first person, second person, or third person narratives, and how that affects the writer in its articulation. She never addresses the genre of stream of consciousness and what it aims to do or signifiy in relation to the subject's experience. We can read about experiences and compare them to our own, but we never can feel the experience of another outside of the language used. It's always a feigned unicity of discourse.

While those more indoctrinated in genre theory might find this text useful, I found (and several of my colleagues) that the writing was poor, dull, and at times, painfully overwritten and obvious. It reads not only like bad academia, but also as an attempt to bolster the significance of an idea that is rather elementary. Her lack of focus on classic rhetorical philosophy also hinders her ties to the manner in which discourse works, and also how truth and authenticity is situated. There is no mention of Cicero, Quintilian, or Artistotle. Her focus on the social identity of the subject within the realm of genre theory makes sense, but again, is elementary. She doesn't address where writing fails, and for me, that is where the most fascinating work of a subject's experience occurs. What happens when white-space in inscribed, as it is in Shakespeare? What of Joyce's gnomon and his "." at the end of the 17th chapter of Ulysses? Her focus (as well as her admission that many of her ideas never much further research) make this feel like an unfinished project with either easily proved theses, or with ideas conveniently left out because of their ability to unravel claims in her work.

Unless you are very much into genre theory, this may be for you. I am not a fan of, nor am I interested in genre theory (as this was my first taste of it). This book was not for me. If I had a wobbly table, and I needed a book to put under a leg to stabilize that table, I would not use this book, for I believe that it is useless in any and all applications.

Set in landscapes ranging from "this armpit town outside Austin, Texas" to "this village in Uzbekistan that was built right smack at the mouth of Hell," these stories lay their plots' central tensions out plainly: "Dad wouldn't buy me a Bart Simpson doll," one begins. Then they take off like little roller coasters, careening through the pathos of Denis Johnson's Jesus' Son, the clowning of David Sedaris's Barrel Fever, the in-your-face violence of Quentin Tarantino, and the bewildered alienation of Franz Kafka. But readers need not know any of Keret's sources to enjoy his stories fully. In this collection of antic tales, Israeli writer Keret chronicles the bitter ironies that determine his characters' daily lives. Set in contemporary Israel, Keret's brief stories most are three to five pages long juxtapose a casual realism with regular flashes of unabashed absurdity, portraying characters on the brink of adulthood forced to confront life's chaotic forces death, justice, love, betrayal for the first time. Keret attempts to render often sad or tragic events with a light touch, and his plots lend a fantastical, whimsical air to simple, everyday reality: a bus driver is obsessed with keeping his schedule, a stewardess falls in love with a passenger, a man is befriended by an angel in disguise, a woman runs a convenience store at the gate to hell. The most successful stories capitalize on their brevity, their irony sharpening as the plot turns on a dime. "Cocked and Locked," for instance, portrays an Israeli and an Arab soldier in a desert standoff; a clever switch of identity reveals that the enemies we create are often born inside ourselves. But Keret's characters can be carelessly drawn, their shifts in sentiment seeming either flip or predictable, as in the story "Good Intentions," which focuses on a coldhearted killer's decision not to murder a good man. Similarly, the longest story, "Kneller's Happy Campers," which follows a young man on a quest for love in the afterlife, seems disjointed and bland after the charms of its conceit wear off. Without strong individuals, the stories here lose critical mass and remain too disparate to command attention as a collection.

Israeli writer Keret's stories are brief and powerful linguistic downpours, usually punctuated by uproarious climaxes. One of the best tells of a girl who requires her boyfriend to rip out his mother's heart to prove his love. This is wonderful political satire, but even taken at face value, its last line is hilarious. "There are two kinds of people," Keret says, "the ones who like to sleep next to the wall, and the ones who like to sleep next to the people who push them off the bed." The final story, "Kneller's Happy Campers," imagines the afterlife of suicides, in which people walk around after offing themselves in a world slightly more awful than the one they left; this is Twain's "Captain Stormfield's Visit to Heaven" turned upside down, and it's almost as funny. Keret gives in to stereotypes when he turns his eye toward Americans or Palestinians, but readers will still find those stories, like the others, smart, insightful, and delightfully hip. John Green

I watched the movie "Wrist Cutters - A Love Story" which is based on a short story by Etgar Keret called "Kneller's Happy Campers". While the movie has a happier ending that the short story, I did enjoy Keret's writing style and the fact his stories are quirky and present life from a different point of view. Keret is a Jewish author and grew up in Israel. His stories have a bit of an existential feel and I think he would be an interesting person to know.

This is one of my favorite books/authors! Each and every story grabs you by the seat of your pants/skirt and takes you on an ever unexpected journey. Etgar Keret is my author idol! If I could write even half as good as him, I'd be a best-seller!

Fantastic Short Read

I (along with what I believe to be most of the other people reviewing) bought this book because I really enjoyed the movie "Wristcutters: A Love Story." Let me say, I was NOT disappointed!!
With the exception of Wristcutters, all of Keret's stories in the book are REALLY short, even in comparison to other short stories that I have read. While I was initially concerned that I would not enjoy such short stories, I found that my initial thoughts were mistaken, and I greatly appreciated their length. This book is really easy to pick up and read when you only have a few minutes to read- say before dinner or during a break at work.
I found all of the stories agreeable, but would have to say that my favorite story was "The Bus Driver Who Wanted to be God." I thought that both characters in this story were extremely likable, and I found the story to be rather sweet. However, in some of the stories, I believe that the ideas presented would be more relatable to someone more familiar with Israeli culture than I.

During her career, Flemming has taught students from elementary to graduate school covering subjects as varied as reading and writing, American literature, time management, speed reading, and study skills. She began writing textbooks while working as Director of the Reading and Writing Center at Dean Junior College. In need of a reading textbook that had lots of exercises combined with genuinely thought-provoking readings, Flemming decided to write her own.
