As The Fraternity Advisor, Patrick Daley has written over 500 articles and helped over 1,000,000 undergraduates improve their Greek Organizations. He has delivered the keynote presentation at national conventions and is the author of two books – The Fraternity Leader and The Chapter President. Pat has also survived over 200 mortar attacks while deployed to Iraq as an Air Force officer; he engineered laser guided robot systems in Italy, and shot a 67 on one magical day. Stop talking and start taking action.

As a member of new fraternity, we chartered last fall, we have had a difficult time with just about everything. There has been no guidance established, when I joined 3 years ago we only had 9 guys, so we've been lost and struggled to figure out how to succeed. Like most college aged men, everyone member of our chapter believes that they have the answers to success. After reading this book, we really do have the answers to success. This past summer I made the decision to purchase the book. It has been an incredible tool for me and my fraternity. We have literally improved in every aspect as a brotherhood. For the last two years, our chapter has been divided into 2-3 groups all of which have different goals for the fraternity, and different visions of what our chapter can be. Implementing the things that we've learned from this book got all the brothers on the same page. We are all working towards a common goal now. Just a few examples of our success:

-We increased our attendance at parties from 200-300 people to over 1200 people, by following the steps laid out in his book.

-Having successful parties has helped out a ton with recruitment, but running our rush week like the book lays out helped drastically. For the past 3 years we have generally gotten 15-25 guys throughout the entire year. This fall semester alone we've gotten 22 guys, with a second rush week planned to start today.

-Another problem the book helped us resolve has been retention. At the end of each year, we are lucky if we still have 10 of our original 15-25 new members around. This year, we have put together the new member program laid out in the book, and we have yet to have a new member miss a single meeting or event.

Anyone who truly wants to improve their chapter will purchase this book. It is the best investment you can possibly make. Our chapter is now on the right path, and I can honestly say that it is all because of the suggestions and guidance that we received from this book.

Essential read for any fraternal member

In my opinion, The Fraternity Leader should be read by every fraternal member. The amount of knowledge and detail this book contains makes it absolutely the best book to bring a struggling fraternity to success or take a successful fraternity and make it even better. Patrick Daily touches on all of key issues such as how to recruit properly, how to overcome financial issues, how to fundraiser thousands of dollars, how to effectively run a New Member program, how to build relations and hold great socials with sororities, etc.. This book was an easy read that inspired me to make my fraternity the best it can be. I thought it was so influential that I will be purchasing a copy for each new member of eboard for this upcoming spring semester. I highly suggest purchasing and reading this book.

Great book

This is a great book for students and advisors. I purchase it as an e book and really enjoy sharing components with th group I advise. This book really great with the examples and experiences. Our students obviously often need an outside perspective and someone experienced to give them guidance. It's an easy read and great advise! Highly recommend for Greek leadership.

About the Author
is Halls-Bascom Professor in the Department of Hebrew and Semitic Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. After rabbinical studies and ordination at Hebrew Union College, Cincinnati, he trained in Bible studies, Semitics, and Egyptology, receiving his Ph.D. at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. He has written widely on wisdom literature and other aspects of biblical literature.

Indispensable

This volume is the first of two that will replace the prior Anchor Bible volume, Proverbs and Ecclesiastes, by R.B.Y. Scott, now more than forty years old. Much has been found, read, and discussed since then, making the new volume necessary and welcome.

The greatest strength of the book is Fox's ability to place Proverbs in the extraordinarily rich wisdom tradition of the ancient world, with particular attention to surviving texts from Egypt, Mesopotamia, and the Dead Sea. No less important is his attention to the differing transmissions of Proverbs through different scriptural traditions. Like the best of the Anchor volumes, the notes delve deeply into the details, constantly paying close attention to the Hebrew, with reference to the Talmud, to elucidate words, syntax, and symbolism.

Fox goes beyond merely recording parallels with other texts and commentaries of prior scholars: he weighs them, disputes them, and advances his own conclusions.

This new volume encourages me to think that the Anchor Bible will continue to grow and improve.

Brilliant

Whatay brilliant comedic feast. If you are in consulting world, even better as you will fall off laughing at the tragic reality of the book. It's satire and comedy lie in the reality of it and the ridiculous nature of our corporate world and its denizens!

Would have been better if there was more context

I am usually generous when I evaluate humour books as I think its hard to write comedy. This book is mostly slapstick humour which is not my top choice but I still appreciate. Overall the book is an easy read. The second half is better than the first half as it is a little repetitive at the beginning - the author was probably trying to provide a full characterization of the protagonist. The main downside of the book is it assumes the reader is familiar with the Indian business school environment and the Consulting industry. While I am a little familiar with both, there were a times when I didn't understand the context. I still enjoyed the book, but would be cautious if I had to recommend to those who are not familiar with the above.

I also think it is a little over priced for this genre. Considering buying the second in the series.

Very good read.

I got this at Bangalore airport as I was about to take a long flight. I wanted something light. This was a very good read recommended by the bookstore employee, he said take this you will not regret it, what a true statement. Some parts of the book, I just had to stop and laugh hysterically, much to the amusement of fellow passengers. I have never read any other book which made me laugh so much. I was surprised to see an okay review.... well, you will get it if you have done engineering from India. About the abrupt ending comment, it is a good fun read. Who needs proper ending. Best 5 bucks I spent. Good job Sidin! You made my journey enjoyable. I have brought the sequel for my next long flight.

Nothing new as far as how excellences in customer services is developed. But a family business that employs 10s of thousands world wide is impressive. A good story and easy read. You could knock it out in an afternoon.

Very interesting book, and an easy read. I stay at Marriott hotels frequently, and once had the pleasure to meet Bill Marriott. It's interesting that the employees at Marriott really view their jobs as a career, and are very positive about the company. After reading this book, you understand why. Bill Marriott does not just describe his successes; he also describes his failures and lost opportunities, and the beginnings of Marriott with his parents root beer franchise. I can understand the great success of Marriott after reading this book. A very thoughtful, interesting book. I talked about the book with the staff at the Marriott where I was staying. Every Marriott employee, and everyone in the hotel industry, should buy and read this book.

Adventure and suspense!

Mr. Cole’s search for wealth in the 1851 gold rush in Australia leaves him dispirited and broke. Taking the next available ship back for England, the Lady Jermyn, he falls in love with Eva Denison, a beauty traveling with her exotic Portuguese stepfather. Disaster strikes when the ship catches fire, and Cole finds himself the sole survivor. Bereft after the loss of his true love, Cole seeks anonymity in London. But something is very strange; is he going mad, or is someone following him? If so, what do they want? Before the story is over, Cole with uncover a ghastly conspiracy, and propel him on an adventure that may cost him that which he loves the most.

Ernest William Hornung (1866-1921) was an excellent Victorian author who is now mainly remembered for his Raffles stories (if he is remembered at all). Before Raffles, though, in 1896 Hornung wrote this wonderful story. This story is exciting, with a wonderful mixture of adventure and suspense that will leave you on the edge of your seat!

I must add one word of warning, though. Being such an old book, it does reflect a society with different standards than our present one. Particularly, the story does involve an African character who is repeatedly referred to by the now discredited “n-word.” So, a certain amount of forbearance is required when reading this book.

Dated adventure

This is a mid-nineteenth century story of adventure on sea and land. It's certainly weak compared with Stevenson or Melville, but is fine for those who enjoy or study the period.

Mr. Cole takes a boat to Australia during the gold rush. He finds little gold, so he goes back home. As it happens, he gets on the same boat he came out on, the 'Lady German.' Whereupon he meets Eva Denison. He does not immediately fall in love, but he does eventually. She is being escorted back to England by her step-father, Jorges Santos.
The boat is not just taking some folks back to England, but has a secret cargo, and, as it happens, catches fire and is lost at sea. Mr. Cole, it appears, is the only survivor of this tragedy. There are some hints of the coming events, but none that explain the full extent of what is occurring.
The story explains Mr. Coles survival and his life in London, where Mr. Cole is feted and praised as the survivor to distraction. Etc.,etc., the events happen and everything turns out for good because others have evidence and wit to realize what is happening, so save the day.
This not a swashbuckling tale, or detective fiction, but it could be one or the other to my mind. It was inetesting to hear.
