...Muslims not the only ones...

This topic of this book is dear to my heart for good reasons. I have Middle Eastern friends and my son plays with their kids as well as at school. We have lots of Muslims in this area of South-West Sydney.

Muslims are not the only ones demonised in so many devious and malicious ways. One should also add vicious.

This book contained no surprises for me, as somebody who belongs to a religious minority that gets virtually zero good press, totally non-violent and has been (and continues to be) the targets for both Western and non-Western countries (yes, Islam too), type the name for which we are known by into YouTube, you will see the most awful videos and associated comment. Nothing is too debased for them to bring up (think the worst and you've got it only HALF of it). Of course some claim to ex-members (how can you check?).

Same about the Muslims, hardly anything gets fact checked, and when you do, you get corroborative material from other sources that they themselves have not fact checked, and soon the NEW facts becomes the ACCEPTED facts - no matter how insinuous and hurtful they may be. They often spur VIOLENT ACTS in others - one should never forget, WORDS DO KILL. Disclosure: I am one of Jehovah's Witnesses and my own Father was jailed for two years when I was very young.

About the Author
Born and raised in New York City, Charles Brandt is a former junior high school English teacher, welfare investigator in East Harlem, homicide prosecutor, and Chief Deputy Attorney General of the State of Delaware. In private practice since 1976, Brandt has been president of the Delaware Trial Lawyers Association and the Delaware Chapter of the American Board of Trial Advocates. He has been named by his peers to both Best Lawyers in America and Best Lawyers in Delaware. He is a frequent speaker on cross-examination and interrogation techniques for reluctant witnesses. Brandt is the author of a novel based on major cases he solved through interrogation, The Right to Remain�Silent. I Heard You Paint Houses (mob argot for "I heard you murder people) is the story of a hit man and the disappearance of J. Hoffa

Charles Brandt the New York born author has done an excellent job of telling the story of Frank "Irish" Sheran a hit man for the mob. Sheran was born in an Irish neighborhood in Philadelphia in 1920. He was tall and hefty. In World War II he served as a combat soldier for 411 horrendous days in hellholes such as Salerno and Anzio. After the war he married and got involved with the Italian dominated Costra Nostra. He became a friend of a mob boss becoming involved in union activities as well as many criminal activities. He was a hit man and killed many men. He was a good friend of Jimmy Hoffa and tells the story of the union leader's disappearance in detail. We also learn about the Watergate scandal and how Hoffa and the mob gave money to Nixon. The book is to be turned into a new film . An interesting look at organized crime. First person quotes from Sheran are used throughout the book. He served time in prison and died in 2003. A good read for fans of Mafia and true crime books.

Great book, but read the qualifications ....

Excellent book - I recommend it for some readers and with some qualifications. Two key interests a reader should have to enjoy this book immensely are appreciation of history and a curiosity for criminal stories and organized crime. Amazingly, there's a great deal of US history here beyond Jimmy Hoffa. The central question is: did Sheeran (the main character) lie to the author? Or is it all true? There's no middle ground. If Sheeran lied on some aspects, then we should not trust any other aspects. To believe Sheeran is to believe: (i) Sheeran killed Hoffa; (ii) the mob assassinated JFK; (iii) the mob threw the 1960 election to JFK by vote fraud in Illinois; (iv) JFK's motive in Bay of Pigs was payback to organized crime to recoup lost assets in Cuba; (v) Joe Kennedy maintained his mob ties his entire life and implied to crime figures that he could "control" his sons JFK and Bobby; (vi) Jimmy Hoffa ordered many violent illegal activities including murder; (vii) the mob made cash bribes to John Mitchell - Nixon's attorney general; (viii) Mitchell actually accepted one such bribe at the front door of his own home. Can all of this really be true? It would be SHOCKING! So I have trouble believing it. One further draw for "I Heard You Paint Houses" is that the main character is such a sociopath. In almost all books, the reader wants to identify with the main character. I sense that the author TRIES to get the reader to identify with Sheeran. Perhaps the author himself bonded with Sheeran. That's bizarre - Sheeran was evil incarnate with a functional and handsome exterior.

Fascinating story

This is a fascinating story that not only encompasses the disappearance of Jimmy Hoffa but also the mob; John Kennedy, his Presidency and his assassination; Bobby Kennedy, his acts as Attorney General, and assassination; Richard Nixon and his Presidency; the Cuban Revolution and the Bay of Pigs invasion. Whew! This is the reason this book is so long...the research by the author is amazing. Frank Sheeran is a hit man for the mob and before his death wanted to "confess his sins" and from interviews over a long period of time, the author has compiled the testimonies of Sheeran into this book. A lot of mysteries are solved, if Sheeran told the truth. At times, the story rambles and repeats itself. I feel the author lost his way a bit by becoming too emotionally close to Sheeran, forgetting that he was a cold-blooded killer who used the court system to avoid punishment way too long and even when imprisioned, the stretch served wasnt any more than a slap on the wrist. One sentence that I was astounded to read was when Sheeran faced his death by saying, "...I confessed my sins to a priest and he forgave them." Frank fully believed he and all his buddies that found religion were all heaven bound.

Much of the material presented here will be familiar to researchers in the experimental and quantitative analysis of behavior; I hope this retrospective summary of my work will prompt them to revisit unresolved questions and explore alternative interpretations. But this book is written primarily to provide some research and conceptual background for dedicated professionals and their students who are applying behavioral analyses to socially significant problems. If it helps them to implement effective, durable treatments, this book will have served its purpose.

About the Author
John A. Nevin, known as Tony, professor emeritus at the University of New Hampshire, studied engineering at Yale University, served in the US Coast Guard, and obtained his Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology at Columbia University in 1963. Since then, he has published over 100 articles and book chapters on the experimental analysis of behavior, many of them co-authored with colleagues, graduate students, and undergraduates. He has received awards from Division 25 of the American Psychological Association, the Society for the Advancement of Behavior Analysis, and the Society for the Experimental Analysis of Behavior for his research contributions and their impact on application.

During the course of writing this book—literally on the cusp of the 21st century between 1998 and 2000—widespread intergroup conflict and violence erupted, both internationally and nationally. In the late 1990s, for instance, "ethnic cleansing" occurred in Kosovo, as Serbs waged war on ethnic Albanians, killing thousands and forcing a million people from their homes. Meanwhile, almost half a world away in Rwanda, an entire nation continued to struggle with the aftermath of genocide, in which an estimated 800,000 Tutsis were systematically murdered by the majority Hutus within a span of 100 days during 1994.

Here in the United States, hate crimes reached a record level during this period. Many of these incidents were cases in which majority group members attacked minority group members, but in many also minority group members attacked members of the majority or members of other minority groups. Consider a sample of highly publicized hate crimes that occurred between 1998 and 2000. In June 1998, James Byrd Jr., a Black man, was beaten unconscious by three White men and then chained to a pickup truck and dragged to his death in jasper, Texas; in October 1998, two young men murdered University of Wyoming college student Matthew Shepard because he was gay; in July 1999, a gunman with ties to a White supremacist church fired shots into a group gathered outside a Korean church in Bloomington, Indiana, killing Won Joon Yoon, a student at Indiana University; in August 1999, Buford O. Furrow opened fire at a Jewish community center, wounding five people, and later said that he wanted his act to be "a wake-up call to America to kill Jews"; and in March 2000, a Black man went on a racially motivated rampage killing three Whites and wounding two others in Wilkinsburg, Pennsylvania.

Events such as these serve as tragic reminders that prejudice based upon race, ethnicity, religion, and sexual orientation continues to exist, and sadly, continues to be expressed in horrific ways. How can we make sense of such hatreds and rivalries between groups of people? What factors give rise to antipathy toward members of certain groups? Are certain "types" of people more likely to be prejudiced? And perhaps the most important question, What can be done to prevent, or at least reduce, prejudice?

These questions lie at the heart of any course that focuses on prejudice and discrimination. Building on a tradition of research in stereotyping and intergroup conflict, social psychologists have much to offer in terms of identifying the origins of prejudice and recommending strategies for its reduction. GOALS OF THIS BOOK

Social Psychology of Prejudice is conceived as a textbook to accompany upper-division psychology courses in prejudice and discrimination. Because of a growing multicultural perspective in psychology, many departments are responding by offering specialty courses in the psychology of prejudice. Very few textbooks appropriate for this audience currently exist, and those that do emphasize Black-White relations in the United States. Although elements of this analysis certainly may be generalized to prejudice against other groups, taking a broader perspective in approaching the topic of prejudice is advantageous for two reasons. First, social psychologists ark increasingly addressing other forms of prejudice: ethnic prejudice (e.g., against Latinos, Asians/, sexism, antigay prejudice, and antifat prejudice, to name just a few. The unique aspects of these types of prejudice have yet to be addressed in an undergraduate text. This book attempts to fill that void.

Second, research on prejudice and discrimination is burgeoning not only in the United States, but also in other countries. Researchers in European countries especially have contributed greatly to our understanding of the extent that identification with a social group underlies prejudice and intergroup discrimination. A focus on Black-White relations in the United States would ignore much of the research in these countries.

The overall goals of this book are to describe the various theories of prejudice, to explore the common psychological processes that maintain prejudice of many kinds (i.e., stereotyping and other cognitive mechanisms, and to address issues of intergroup relations and social identity as sources of prejudice. Additionally, this book focuses on how marginalized individuals cope with prejudice, and how prejudice affects one's sense of identity and self-worth. Finally, methods to reduce prejudice will be considered, and the inevitability of prejudice will be addressed.

short but sweet

I usually read longer novels so I was a little hesitent to read this one. I wasn't sure if it would end up being cheesy with no character development but it was not at all! The character development was really good and I found myself not wanting the book to end. It was a quick read but it was perfect for reading at the beach or on a plane. I will be reading more from this author for sure!

Kate Harper just needs to get one spectacular shot of the mysterious Prince Duarte Medina. Her future and her sisters well being are riding on Kate getting the shot that will sell magazines. Kate hadn't plan on getting caught red handed by the handsome Prince himself.

Prince Duarte Medina has had enough of the press and their photographers to last him a life time. When he finds one hanging outside his room he is furious. Especially since it's the woman that exposed his family to the world. Duarte decides to turn the tables on Kate and offers her a way out of her predicament. Kate's relationship with her sister is very touching and Duarte open acceptance of her speaks volumes for his true self. I am eager to read the next book in this royally hot series.

Sweet story

I really enjoyed this story. The romance between Kate, and Duarte was refreshing. I also loved how Duarte treated Kate's sister. The emotions in this story touched my heart.

Kate was a reporter. She had to have a good job to support her sister. Her sister was a disabled adult. The long time care facility for Rebecca was costly.

Duarte's family had been hurt by the press. He could not stand reporters. He met Kate, when Kate was attempting to climb over his balcony. He may not like reporters, but there was something about Kate that intrigued him. Duarte could have called the police, or his security team when he found Kate on his balcony. Instead he came up with a plan to make her his fake fianc� for 30 days. During that time the two found love. They learned and understood each other's past pains. They wanted to help each other out. It took a while for them to trust each other, but in the end, they found trust, and love. This really was a good story. Rebecca made this story special! I loved her love for Life, and how she trusted people and animals without giving a care in the world. I loved her innocents in this story!

Awesome book. Ii wanted to learn as much as ...

Awesome book.Ii wanted to learn as much as possible about periodization.This book help clear up some of the issues i had. I am confident now that i can right a very effective programme for my athletes.The information on individual events is very detailed. I have other coaching manuals and this is the best yet. I am from the fastest nation in the world(Jamaica), books are my only way of developing my skills as a coach, and this book has it all.There is a lot of information on speed development.Thank you US Track and field, Will Freeman, Larry Judge, and all the other coaches that have contributed.
