Very cool (if you love history)
By Maebh
This is a collection of documents that were written on Egyptian temples all translated in english and just has so many very interesting documents some that I have never heard of and others that I have heard of but have only had small portions of them in history books. It was a required book for a history class but I will be keeping it because it gives you much more insight into the lives and laws of early civilizations. Amazing laws and documents that before 1500BCE you may think that they only existed in much later time periods. Interesting insights into the people and the detail of record keeping that some culutres had. If you love history of this era it is a must have.

Pretty interesting anecdotes
By Floyd
Got for a class. Pretty interesting anecdotes. This book is mostly selected texts/stories from ancient texts. Has some back-story and info on the context. I can't see this being very informative in a stand-alone setting, seems to be intended to be used along with other textbooks, aid in lectures, or as homework to supplement other lectures (which is what it was used for in my class.)

Just - ok
By Midland
After having read many books on real estate investing that were more of the mainstream self-help type, I wanted to find a book that was on an advanced level, perhaps something that is used in business school/university. This book does in fact read more like a collegiate book, and it has tidbits here and there that were not in the other books I've read. However, some areas are very poorly explained, I'd probably say a good 1/4 of the book does an awful job at explaining areas that I understood previously. So, I normally don't write reviews, but I then thought if I find some areas confusing and they're topics I did understand coming INTO reading this, then some people who are using this for the first time are going to have some serious "WTF" moments. The sad thing is it's not because the topics are too difficult to understand, like I said - just not well written. (Explaining something so poorly where the reader actually becomes dumber in that area is not a good thing!) But having said that, this is a good supplement book to pull some facts out of that are not in the mainstream books. I want to give it a one just to offset the 5 star ratings, but I don't think it's that bad. (Although seeing as there are only three other ratings as of now (2011) which are all 5/5, I'm sure 2 are biased/author affiliated.)

Review
"With its dazzling erudition and its vast scope, The Birth of the Modern World is a masterpiece of distance-annihilating synthesis…At a stroke, all other general histories of the nineteenth century have become parochial…I cannot think of any living historian who could match this feat. The rest of us must simply applaud." Niall Ferguson, University of Oxford

"Bayly's work is awe-inspiring in its breadth and authority. To write a history of this kind, the author must possess a command of his sources... outstanding lucidity and a capacity to organise immensely complex and disparate material; above all, perhaps, a sense of proportion and the ability to balance striking detail against swooping vision. All these Bayly enjoys in abundance. Readers will enjoy an invigorating and enriching experience." The Telegraph

"A truly global history, a work of great richness and jaw-dropping erudition that ranges effortlessly across the continents, laying out a complex, multifaceted picture of modernity. A brilliantly told global story." The Sunday Times

"A remarkable achievement. As an accomplished and innovative historian, Bayly has the rare ability not just to indicate the need for a 'global approach to historical change' but also to deliver, with scrupulous regard for the complexity of his subject. Empire and genocide, nationalism and modernity - these are grand themes enough for many a work of history, but they do not exhaust the range of Bayly's ambition and erudition. It is a tribute to Bayly's skill that his discussion can be read with as much profit by those who are familiar with the historical debates he engages with as by those previously innocent of them." Times Literary Supplement

"Chris Bayly's erudite and engrossing account of the global birthpangs of modernity is not only a landmark contribution to historical literature but, indirectly and without a hint of overt engagement, a pertinent addition to contemporary debates about globalisation and the world order. This is a book that historians, foreign policy elites and protagonists on both sides of the debate need to read.... Bayly has produced the most compelling and significant historical synthesis to appear for many years." London Review of Books

"An enormously important book in its approach to global history, it is also a riveting account of modern warfare, empire, nationalism and religion. Bayly holds the reader's attention across a history of kingdoms ... In turn, what he delivers is a fascinating challenge to contemporary understandings of globalisation, religious belief and the threads of Empire." The Times

"Christopher Bayly’s book will be essential reading for anyone seeking an historical angle on globalisation, and in particular on its impact on the world before 1914…No book I have ever read combines Bayly’s level of knowledge, clarity and insight on this vast and hugely important theme." Dominic Lieven, London School of Economics and Political Science

"The impact of this book will be as broad as its originality, currency, and force." Linda Colley, Princeton University

"This brilliant history of the 19th century offers remarkably lucid, supple analyses of the concepts around which this story revolves: modernity, nationalism, imperialism, the state, industrialisation. Bayly not only deftly summarises a startling range of complex previous literature, as well as integrating it effectively into his bigger picture, but also pushes many of those theoretical debates forward." Stephen Howe

"This book, by one of the foremost scholars of modern Indian history, is a sprawling smorgasbord ... a challenging and thought-provoking piece of world history." Journal of World History

Winner of the Wolfson History Prize 2004

Winner of the H-Soz-u-Kult Book Prize (World and International History)

"[A] magisterial synthesis" Journal of Modern History

"This is a brilliant book. Bayly's analytical approach merits high praise and the wealth of information he presents is admirable." Iberoamericana

From the Back Cover
Covering the period 1780–1914, The Birth of the Modern World shows how events in Asia, Africa, and South America – from the decline of the eighteenth-century Islamic empires to the anti-European Boxer rebellion of 1900 in China – had a direct impact on European and American history. And conversely, how the “ripple effects” of crises such as the European revolutions and the American Civil War worked their way through to the rest of the world. None of the great themes of the nineteenth-century world – the rise of the modern state, industrialisation, liberalism, imperialism, and the progress of world religions – is untouched by the novel perspectives of this compelling new history.

About the Author
C.A. Bayly is Vere Harmsworth Professor of Imperial and Naval History at the University of Cambridge and a Fellow of St Catharine’s College, Cambridge. He is winner of the 2004 Wolfson History Prize for his distinguished contribution to the writing of history.

On the virtues of biting off more than you can chew
By greg taylor
(A note on my three star rating-When reading and thinking about this book I wavered between a three to a five star rating. I believe it to be on balance superb where it succeeds and somewhat flawed where it does not. I settled on the three star rating to drive the overall rating down a bit. Hopefully my review will explain the issues I have with this book).
Sir Christopher Bayly has given us a masterful, complex, polemical, flawed and mostly satisfying book on the history of the whole bloody planet during the period from 1780-1914. During its 487 pages of text and 25 pages of footnotes we are introduced to a variety of historiographical debates, more than a few snarky remarks about other historians, economists, sociologists and the histories of a variety of countries. This last is both the most impressive part of the book and the part I found the most flawed. Bayly is one of the foremost historians of the British Empire and of India. His expertise in those histories, in the histories of the Ottoman Empire, Southeast Asia, Iran, Egypt all strike this reader as subtle and complete. On the other hand, I frequently found myself questioning his grasp of the history of the United States which is a subject in which I have read widely for many years.
However, I want to do this book justice. So my plan is to tell you some of Bayly's main themes and to discuss the organization of his book. Then I will go over why I think the Bayly misses the boat on the U.S. and one area where I found his argument unconvincing.

If Sir Bayly has one overall theme, it is to put an end to the idea that modernity (however that is understood) was born in Europe/the U.S. and then diffused out to the rest of the world. He is very resistant to the idea expressed in the phrase, "the West and the rest". To develop this broad theme, Bayly defines modernity as a mix of economic, political, religious, social and intellectual movements that changed the way that people across the globe dressed, ate, thought, prayed, governed themselves as well as how they made money. Some of the processes did have their origin in Europe, some actually started in other parts of the world first and spread from there, and many seem to have arisen simultaneously. Even the processes that were first started in Europe, when they began to impact other cultures, did so in a way that was adapted to the needs and cultures of those people. The tendency has been to see the West during this period as being the main actor on the world stage. Our squabbles became the squabbles of the world. Bayly will allow for very little of that. In Bayly's history, the entire world is full of cross-influences, full of peoples adapting to similar processes of change and acting upon each other. In particular, Bayly wants us to recognize how important India, the Ottoman Empire, China and Japan were during this period.
Bayly's second great theme is directed toward historical method. The only way to make his point is to make it globally. We have the resources to writes global history now that is focused on all of the world's peoples and by doing so we deepen our understanding of our national and regional histories.
His final great theme is to deny to history a singular or even two or three major causal forces. He is not a Marxist. His history could readily be seen as an alternative to Hobsbawm's Age Of...series. Economics plays a large role in Bayly's history but so does religion, nationalism, science, politics, war, industrious revolutions and disease. None of these causal forces can be reduced to one of the other or to any group of the others. In Bayly's history things could have gone differently.

So much for his major themes in my reading. Overall, I found myself in agreement with them. I wish I could say the same for the structure of his book. Bayly offers us his history in five separate narrative sections. The narrative sections focus on the Ancient Regime prior to the period in question and then four sub-periods. These narratives are interspersed with essays on various of Bayly's components of modernity. There is a great essay on the rise of the city during the early part of the nineteenth century and how that was impacted by and impacted the beginnings of industrialization. He has a very insightful essay on the changes that occurred in the major religions during this period. He makes the argument that one of the ways that Buddhism, Islam and Hinduism all reacted to the Christianity being imposed by the West was to tighten up their doctrine. Scripture became standardized, doctrine became more uniform. This is turn led the Christian churches to do the same. The major religions all experienced a period of growth in the number of adherents and some of the smaller religions died out or became less common.

I have mixed feelings about this structure. It results in occasionally confusing reading in that I was not really sure what period was being discussed. On the other hand, the focused essays sometime allow for points to be made more powerfully than they would in a flowing narrative. Just be prepared to have to go back and reread sections to get the timeline straight.

So what are my problems with Bayly's book? My first problem is in regards to his section on science. He explains how some cultures were able to incorporate scientific theories into their own heritage. But he never deals with the ultimately corrosive impact of scientific practice/theorizing. And this is one area where I would argue that Western influence does follow the diffusionist model. Bayly makes some fair arguments for how non-Western countries adapted science to their culture but never really makes an argument for how that then worked back to effect Western countries in return.
Secondly, as I mention above, I have read a fair amount of U.S. history. I found many of his statements about that history to be questionable or off by about 30 or 40 years. When it comes to U.S. history, Sir Bayly has a tin ear.
For example, on p.190, Bayly states that "the 1880s and 1890s seem to have been a period when racial awareness and segregation on the grounds of race became more obtrusive in almost all societies." That is a very debatable proposition in terms of U.S history. I could argue for almost any other decade from 1820 on as being as good a candidate for that statement.
In part, I think it has to do with his reading in U.S. history. I took a close look at his bibliography and several things struck me. Outside of the books listed that speak to his specialties, it is somewhat (Enter Irony!) parochial. It is otherwise very English both in the sense of the language and the country of publication. There are approximately 560 entries listed and only 12 are in other languages (all European). He tends to lean a lot on certain books for countries that are not his specialty. His American history is largely a mix of Bailyn, Pocock and the single volume Penguin History of the United States. That hardly cuts it.

This, of course, speaks to that part of my title about biting off more than you can chew. I do not believe it is possible anymore for one person to know the history of all the cultures and countries of the world as well as Bayly knows England or India. Largely, I think Bayly would agree. I am sure he would agree that his global history is a work in progress- that others will expand on it, tighten it and change in ways that speak more forcefully to the actual experience of all people worldwide. In the meantime, his book is full of insights about many different cultures and historical technique. It is not the final word but it is a good beginning.

Superb
By Enigma
This is the best book I have read on the history of globalization. It is superb. It is well written. It is sweeping in its vision. And the scholarship that undergirds the book is remarkable. Bayly has read widely in disparate fields like African, Chinese, Mughal, and British history, nationalism, economic development, the state, military history, and globalization.

Bayly appeals to the professional historian, interested in historiographical debates over nationalism, colonialism, economic development, and many other matters. He brings these debates into his narration in a judicious manner. But historiography does not overwhelm the narrative. This is a book that can be savored by the professional historian and educated layperson alike.

As good as history gets
By Malkauns
This book is going to revolutionize how we think about the history of globalization. To the traditional gaze from the West Eastword, it gives equal relevance to how the East influenced the West. For instance, it makes the important argument that nationalism was not just a western concept but arose relatively independently in many non-western countries. By looking at exchanges in both directions, with a masterful understanding of recent historical scholarship, it provides an authoritative corrective to existing understandings of imperialism, colonialism, trade, development and other globalizing phenomena. Besides being an important, even profound, work of history, it is also characterized by Bayly's encyclopedic knowledge of social and economic theory. As Nial Ferguson says in his blurb - this is a masterpiece.

She could overlook how her son has begun to idolize Rusty, but she’s having a heck of a time ignoring the flutters in her stomach every time the man smiles at her.

Used to always being on his own, now he has a young boy following him around imitating his every move, and a surly young lady glaring at him. Second Chances for Rachel and Rusty
By Shirl
This is a beautiful story about Rachel and Rusty and the second chance they got in life to find love.
Rusty, was lied to and cheated on and doesn't trust any woman with his heart.
Rachel, is a widow with a small son who is her whole life and doesn't need or want another man in her life.
They both work on a big horse ranch, Rusty as the foreman and Rachel as a cook.
Can they both work and live at the same ranch when their hearts and minds want more then they are willing to give.
This story is full of surprises will make you laugh and cry and hold your breath, but will keep you turning the pages as it pulls on your heartstrings. Great read!

She almost seemed like she was pushing family away
By Janet Baldocchi
Callie Hutton's Middle American roots come through with this Oklahoma Lover Series. I adore this family. Rachel was always a haunting character, because she was so distant and stubborn. She almost seemed like she was pushing family away. Rachel regrets a lot in her life except her son from a loveless marriage. What makes Callie Hutton's writing so strong is her capturing of a resiliency that reflects this time period, something that we may be missing today. Rachel makes you cheer and want to shake her at the same time and say, "Rachel, don't be so hard on yourself....please!". There are other books in this series, which I hope people reading these reviews, go and read them. While this book is a standalone, with the scope of all the other books, is an opportunity for you to be embraced by a wonderful family. When you come to a family gathering on a page, don't be surprised if you feel that someone has just patted you on the back and said, "come in and join the celebration". It is my hope that Callie bundles this series at some point, so that all the pages and characters come together and we smile...

A must read!
By Sara A
I would highly recommend this wonderful love story.. Rachel takes an instant disliking to Rusty a stranger, after her son Will bumps into him in the store and Rusty tells him that he needs to apologize to the woman behind the counter and fix the display. Rachel was seeing red telling him off about telling her son what to do. On her way back to the ranch where she works she gets stuck in the mud only to be rescued by Rusty. She ends up starting to warm up to him when a bomb is dropped on him and he realizes he has a14 old daughter Amelia that may or may not be his. He enlists Rachel's help bc he has no idea how to take care of his child, and Amelia isn't happy to be there. Rusty has to overcome his thought process about women to win Rachel back, and Rachel has get over not wanting to marry again. I couldn't put this book down and cannot wait to read the next in the series..

Good general Metallurgy book
By Amazon Customer
I have to say that any ASM book is a good investment. Even though I am a metallurgist I needed to review several things and this book was a very good reference. This is the book that ASM teaches the class with the same title with. I have read most of it and plan on taking the class when it comes to town.

Good book, I enjoyed reading it. I found a lot of the subject matter to be quite basic so if you have little or no prior knowledge its probably a good reference. I would have liked to see more coverage and explanations of the different microstructures; the formation of. Overall I thought it was a good read though.

The Legacy of Conquest: The Unbroken Past of the American West, by Patricia Nelson Limerick Ph.D.

"Limerick is one of the most engaging historians writing today." --Richard White

The "settling" of the American West has been perceived throughout the world as a series of quaint, violent, and romantic adventures. But in fact, Patricia Nelson Limerick argues, the West has a history grounded primarily in economic reality; in hardheaded questions of profit, loss, competition, and consolidation. Here she interprets the stories and the characters in a new way: the trappers, traders, Indians, farmers, oilmen, cowboys, and sheriffs of the Old West "meant business" in more ways than one, and their descendents mean business today. 28 illustrations

From Publishers Weekly
The popular image of Western history is our own creation myth, writes the author, who teaches history at the University of Colorado. Frederick Jackson Turner's ethnocentric, nationalistic frontier is passe; modern historians have deemphasized the frontier, focusing on economics and the diversity of Western settlers. Limerick shows us a competitive, contentious West, an important meeting ground for Indians, Latin-Americans, Anglo- and Afro- Americans and Asians. On the subject of Western violence, she notes that the frontier environment is not a proper explanation for incidents involving Hispanics, Chinese, Japanese, blacks, Mormons, strikers and radicals. Limerick examines the key role of federal money in Western economya major issue of continuity in the area's history; she discusses "borderland" (Hispanic) history and immigration restrictions. History buffs will appreciate this dynamic perspective on the real, as opposed to fantasy, West. Photos not seen by PW.

From Library Journal
The purpose of this volume, never precisely defined, appears to be twofold: to debunk the popular myths and misperceptions surrounding the settlement of the American West; and refute the theory that western history was a period marked by the opening and closing of a frontier. The author argues for thinking of the West as "a placeas many complicated environments," one that is a "preeminent case study in conquest and its consequences." However, she does not successfully integrate the various topics she tackles. The point of her work becomes increasingly vague as she jumps from topic to topic, her style ranging from intellectual and scholarly to casual and journalistic. Not recommended. Good and bad
By Thomas W. Robinson
Written as part of the "New Western History," Limerick attempts to not only revitalize Western history and prove its worth in the greater scheme of American history, but also to dispel the myth of the frontier that she was in some ways personified by Frederick Jackson Turner's "Frontier Thesis." Arguing against Jackson, Limerick writes that the West was a place of conquest, rather than frontier, and further states that the continuity of the region's past has continued into the present. The latter also goes against Turner's thesis because he felt the closing of the frontier in 1890 was essentially the end of the West. Although he wrote during this time, it does not seem he would have argued for a continued continuity.
The book is broken into two parts. The first part attempts to dispel the myths and legends of the "Old West" that Limerick feels have been perpetuated not only by popular histories and Hollywood, but also some academic historians. Far from being the rugged individualists that Hollywood or Frederick Jackson Turner would have you believe, Limerick argues that Westerners relied heavily on the federal government, needing assistance in dealing with Indians, distributing land, and assisting the railroads. Furthermore, Limerick shows that the ideal of the West as the land of golden opportunity is more myth than reality, as the West was actually a place of continuous cycles of boom and bust.
The second part of the book discusses groups that Limerick deems "unconquered," those who have largely been ignored in histories of the West. Going against the stereotype of western Indians, Limerick shows that Indians of the West were persistent in attempts to keep their culture. The strongest portion of the book may be Limerick's discussion of Hispanic and Asian peoples in the West and how their mere presence disputes Turner's thesis. It also brings two groups who have largely played no role in the popular histories of the West into the picture.
For all of the positives of Limerick's work, there are some flaws. The biggest, in my mind, is how frequently she jumps from decade to decade and topic to topic. This makes the book almost incoherent at times as one cannot always keep track of when or where she is referring to. The problem is that this makes it seems as though Limerick is talking about an amorphous, hard to define, "West" that could stretch across the entire country, depending on what time period you are referring to. Perhaps I am oversimplifying this, but I thought the time period and area studied was poorly defined. Finally, Limerick links the past to the present (at the time she was writing), which can be very problematic. While it does tie in to her overall thesis, I found it disconcerting. Overall, however, Limerick has written a good synthesis of the secondary literature of the "New Western History" and has given time and space to groups that have often been marginalized.

A Classic in Western History...
By Daniel A. French
In The Legacy of Conquest, Patricia Nelson Limerick accomplishes three feats not usually accomplished by historians. With some trepidation and the risk of offending others in the field, she writes a readable and entertaining narrative. This is however, not a prerequisite of good academic history, so possibly her second accomplishment is more worthy, that with her thesis she debunks a cornerstone in American history which is as over-mentioned as Tocqueville, she lays Frederick Jackson Turner's Frontier Thesis to waste. To this, legions of young upstarts have no doubt said "thank you." While this daring move may be enough to celebrate on its own, it is her third feat that is most worthy. Limerick views western history with continuity--as an ongoing process, unfettered by Turner's geographic and periodized borders, and demonstrates the usefulness of looking at the West for what it has always been, a historical pallet.

My use of the word pallet may be a bit clumsy, but with deference to Richard White, I am trying to avoid using his term "Middle Ground," which in itself is overused--pallet may be more apt in the case of Legacy. The reason for this is that Limerick correctly describes the West as a great mixing ground of cultures, motives, and nature that has continually been redefined. No "closed" sign hung on the West side of the Mississippi after Turner wrote in 1893, quite the contrary. As long as there is profit in "them thar hills," the West lived, and lives on--this statement in itself may be a sufficient quick summary of Limerick's work.

Starting her work dispelling the myth of Westerners as innocent victims, the real story of the West cannot be neatly divided into good guys and bad guys. In Legacy we learn of a mixed-gendered West with complicated dynamics between Native Americans, Mexicans, missionaries, and the discontented. All in some way are seeking their own interests, whether it is to live peacefully, save souls, or extract fortunes--Limerick teaches us that there is no one size fits all narrative to the West.

The most powerful theme, underlying all else however, is private property. Limerick goes far in describing the basis for "the emotional center of Western history" as the establishment of private property. It was then and remains today that the "dominance of the profit motive" that was the driver of westward manifest destiny--this point in itself dispels Turner's thesis, if the frontier closed, then why did profit seekers continue heading west?

Linking profit to myth, Limerick dashes the myth of the self-employed adventurer making it on his or her own past the prairie. While we learn that there was work done by individuals "laboring on their own," it was big capital, especially in mining that defines rapid westward expansion. One could go farther to equate western expansion as technological expansion, for as transportation, extraction, and communications advanced, so did the drive west. Despite the specifics, Legacy forever links capital to Western History, and the "rape of the land" to capital, here it was more the drive for profits and wages that defines the American character than Turner's independent adventurer.

No story of the West can be told without the discussion of the Native American, and it is here that we most realize that Limerick's book is not a book of history; it is a debunker of history. Possibly no truer statement has ever been made than "The historiographic past has not, after all, provided the firmest ground for launching a defense of professional history." The history of the western United States cannot be defined by the old consensus ethnographic notion of savages versus civilized, yet it cannot be defined by history written by Indians either. The West is and was "a complex cultural world" and in Legacy, it is presented in all of its complexities. Limerick concludes that the interrelationship between the Europeans and the Indians by its very nature is unsettled. She is clear that there can only be versions of the Western past, not an objective account.

Ethnicity as a part of Western development is not limited to Native Americans, certainly Mexico plays a role in the development of the American West. Framing the Western legacy of borderlands as a continuation of the British/Spanish imperial struggle, Limerick also brings the Puritan belief that the "papists to the south" were problematic into the fold. Here Legacy speaks as much about today as it does in the past, that even though the mestizos have played a major role in the history of North America, they were and are still viewed as alien by Americans.

Whether it was Indians, Mexicans, Chinese, or Mormons, culturally constructed divisions of race and religion were key factors in dividing the West and play a vital part in the complex and misunderstood history of the West. As one reads farther into Legacy, the one-history-fits-all approach of the Turnerian thesis as an accepted part of the scholarship of the past seems more like an embarrassment in the annals of the academy.

The story of the West is not just a story of people, it is also a story of nature. The frontier as a measurement was defined by population--trees, water rights and environmental exploitation never played into the picture. Gifford Pinchot and John Muir should play prominently in any history of the West, their work went far preserve some of the most beautiful lands on the planet. Those are just the well known spots however. Legacy correctly identifies the past crimes of buffalo and bear slaughter as well as the ongoing destruction wrought by the extractive industries. Long after Limerick's writing the boom and bust of the West is continually defined by technological advances in extraction, from horizontal boring to fracking.

For Limerick, the difficulty in writing objective Western history has been the inevitability of "friction with popular beliefs," and while we know that is true with all history, Legacy convinces us it is perhaps most difficult with Western history. As Americans, the myths are deeply engrained within us. This is what made Limerick's work important, Legacy defined the so-called New Western History, finally putting Turner's legacy to rest. Western history cannot be defined by the myths of good versus bad or savage versus civilized, it is a complicated story intertwining capitalism, nature, and the notion of the other, which continues into the present.

while a bit pessimistic it has its good points
By C. Corrick
In The Legacy of Conquest, Patricia Nelson Limerick puts forth her thesis that the conquest of the Trans-Mississippi West is an ongoing economically driven process. Focusing on the West as a physical place rather than a mythic ideal, the author demonstrates how the frontier never closed and that the conquest continues to this day. The book looks at the conquerors of the West and the obstacles they face from Native peoples, westward expansion, immigration, and government interference or the lack thereof. Those coming west did not come with the idea of destroying the land or the Indians, but with the hope of economic improvement and opportunity.
Few people coming west concerned themselves with the Native Americans whose land they began to occupy. Farmers, ranchers, and miners seeking wealth worried more about their own survival than the survival of Indians. Many pioneers portrayed themselves as victims when their dreams of wealth came face to face with the reality of grasshopper plagues, overgrazed ranges, and barren mines. This self-victimization continues to this day with these same groups decrying government waste while asking for subsidies. However, some who came to the west did become true victims.
Some of those who came west in an attempt to make their fortune mining ended up working in the mines of large companies or working other low paying jobs. Those who worked in the mines put themselves in grave danger everyday. With no safety regulations and labor laws that blamed workers for their injuries, mining was one of the deadliest occupations. Attempts to unionize Mineworkers led to mine owners using violence and murder to dissuade union membership. Many who worked the mines immigrated from England and Ireland. These European immigrants, while low on the class scale, were not as low as those who came from a different ethnic background.
Non-white immigrants all faced similar experiences. Chinese immigrants, hoping to improve their lives, faced hostility from all sides. Local and state governments barred them from living in certain areas, bringing over their families, and working in all but the most menial and dangerous of occupations. Mexicans and Latinos who came to work in agriculture faced constant harassment and persecution that continues to this day. The idea that an immigrant is taking a job from an American plays a large part in anti-immigration movements to this day. Unfortunately, most who oppose immigration refuse to realize that the jobs immigrants perform are ones that most Americans consider to menial or low paying to perform. Limerick's weaving of the past and present together shows how the problems of the Old West are still with us today.
The author does an excellent job of examining the past problems of the West and showing how they are unresolved. Arguments between ranchers and the federal government persist over grazing fees. Farmers receive payments for not growing certain crops. Mining laws allow companies to buy land for a shockingly low price and strip it of its mineral worth and beauty. Native Americans, pushed onto reservations, are now suing for the enforcement of past treaties. Limerick shows the irony of the attitude of the West in pushing the federal government away with one hand while reaching for a handout with the other.
While The Legacy of Conquest is highly recommended to students of American history, it does have its flaws. The author overuses metaphor in the early chapters of the book, making it read more like an opinion piece than a historical one. The author's inclusion of the Mormon Church's problems seems forced and does not belong in a book about the economically driven conquest of the American West. Limerick also uses a non-chronological approach that may bother some readers. However, the author does an excellent job at combining primary and secondary sources into an interesting book. Despite some minor problems, Limerick shows that while the appearance of the West changes the conquest of the West continues.
