About the Author
Ama Ata Aidoo has distinguished herself as a writer and as a consultant on education and gender issues. She graduated from the English Department of the University of Ghana, Legon, where she was immediately appointed Junior Research Fellow of Advanced Creative Writing Program at Stanford University and, in the early 1980s, a Minister of Education in Ghana. While lecturing in the Department of English at the University of Cape Coast in the 1970s she was also appointed to serve on the Board of Directors of the Ghana Medical and Dental Council. She has travelled widely, and has been appointed Visiting Professor and Distinguished Visiting Professor to the English, Theatre, African, and African American Studies departments in a number of universities and colleges in the United States. She is the Executive Director of Mbaasem, a foundation to support African American women writers and their work. Her publications include the dramas The Dilemma of a Ghost (Longman, Harlow, 1965) and Anowa (Longman, Harlow, 1970); the short stories No Sweetness Here (Longman, Harlow, 1970); the novels Our Sister Killjoy or Reflections from a Black-Eyed Squint (Longman, Harlow, 1977 and Changes (The Women's Press, London, 1991); the poetry Someone Talking to Sometime (College Press, Harare, 1985) and An Angry letter in January and Other Poems (Dangaroo Press, Coventry, 1992); and the children's books The Eagle and the Chickens and Other Stories (Tana Press, Enugu, 1986) and Birds and Other Poems (College Press, Harare, 1987). Ama Ata Aidoo's many awards include the Nelson Mandela Prize for Poetry in 1987 for Someone Talking to Sometime and the Commonwealth Writers' Prize for Africa for Changes in 1992.

The Dilemma of a Ghost is profoundly deep in the sense that it is based in the world of newly independent post-colonial black Africa in collision with the world of the black African-American. If you are interested in such things as ideology and culture then you could definitely enjoy the conflicting and sometimes tragically comical images of these characters' choices. The woman and the man and their in-laws make the story traditional in its setting, but the influence of white U.S. culture on the bride and the whole academic and intellectual elitism of the modern Africa juxtaposed upon the flesh of traditional Africa are bared here. And the results like the finale of A Raisin in the Sun are hardly bearable to the human desire for pleasant resolution. But all are very realistic and spawn considerable thought instead of the usual types of forgettable works that are usually praise as classics. If you are interested in the practicalities of love and real people the plot line will satisfy you desire for drama. And also you can glimpse into the mind of an early commentary on African female thought about syndrom of the African man who wants to be in a capitalist and so-called educated world and its lack of practicality in the real situation at the time. About the Author
David A. Clark, PhD, L. Psych., is professor of psychology at the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton, NB. He has published numerous articles on cognitive theory and therapy of depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder and is a founding fellow of the Academy of Cognitive Therapy. He is coauthor of Scientific Foundations of Cognitive Theory and Therapy of Depression with Aaron Beck and Brad Alford, and he has recently published the Clark-Beck Obsessive Compulsive Inventory with the Psychological Corporation. He has received a number of research grants to study the cognitive basis of distress. He is also an active member of the Obsessive-Compulsive Cognitions Working Group and is associate editor of Cognitive Therapy and Research.

Christine Purdon, PhD, C. Psych., is associate professor of psychology at the University of Waterloo in Waterloo, ON, and is also a consulting psychologist with the Anxiety Treatment and Research Centre at St. Joseph's Healthcare in Hamilton, ON. She is a licensed psychologist who has been researching and treating obsessional problems for the past decade. She received three early career awards for her contributions to research on obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and is a member of the Obsessive-Compulsive Cognitions Working Group, an international research group devoted to examining the role of cognitive appraisal in the development and persistence of OCD.

She is a member of the Academy of Cognitive Therapy and divides her time between conducting research on OCD; assessing and treating OCD and other anxiety problems; and training residents, PhD students, and students in other mental health professions in cognitive-behavioural therapy and treatment of anxiety disorders. She is currently coauthoring a comprehensive book on treatment of OCD for professionals under contract with the American Psychological Association Press.

A great resource for OCD patients and therapists

I am a CBT psychologist who has done a lot of work with OCD over the years. I attended a seminar by David Clark and have read his other book on CBT for OCD, geared toward therapists. His CBT perspective on OCD makes a great deal of sense and I have used his strategies with numerous clients with much success. I have many of my OCD clients buy this book; they all have great things to say about it. The strategy "Do Nothing" sounds counterintuitive and before I started assigning this book to my clients they often had a hard time with the idea that fighting their obsessions was counterproductive. As a result of assigning the book for homework (one chapter per week), my clients have "bought in" to the CBT perspective on their problem. The book has helped me design in-session exercises and provides good homework ideas. It is well written and the chapters go quickly. My clients have benefitted greatly. Hurray for Purdon and Clark!

Has Your Mind Been Hijacked by Obsessive Thoughts? This is for you.

This helped a great deal in explaining the OCD and ritual processes as well as providing exercises to help desensitize response to the target issue. I would recommend it to those who are much more in their heads with the chronic thoughts that cycle around, and also for those who catastrophize issues in their minds so they are responding to them as if they are happening, ie panic attacks, waves of fear/sadness. Also, I recommended for someone who has OCD around health issues, ie fearing diseases will happen and obsessing about if they have a diagnosis, and if not fearing they are vulnerable to the myriad of diagnoses in the world. This wasn't so much for the person who needs to turn the light switch off 27 times before leaving the room, def more about being in your head and Obsessive Thoughts hijacking it.

About the Author
Mario F. Triola is a Professor Emeritus of Mathematics at Dutchess Community College, where he has taught statistics for over 30 years. Marty is the author of Essentials of Statistics, Elementary Statistics Using Excel, and Elementary Statistics Using the Graphing Calculator, and he is a co-author of Biostatistics for the Biological and Health Sciences, Statistical Reasoning for Everyday Life,and Business Statistics. He has written several manuals and workbooks for technology supporting statistics education. Outside of the classroom, Marty has been a speaker at many conferences and colleges. His consulting work includes the design of casino slot machines and fishing rods, and he has worked with attorneys in determining probabilities in paternity lawsuits, identifying salary inequities based on gender, analyzing disputed election results, analyzing medical data, and analyzing medical school surveys. Marty has testified as an expert witness in New York State Supreme Court. The Text and Academic Authors Association has awarded Mario F. Triola a "Texty" for Excellence for his work on Elementary Statistics.

The editions get worse and worse

Our department has used Triola's statistics book for our large,
multi-section baby stats course for at least the past six years, and
it was through simple inertia that we adopted the 11th edition. Using
the earlier editions, I had almost begun to like Triola's
follow-the-recipe approach, and was able to make the course useful to
some of our students.

The 11th edition, however, is far worse than anything that came
before. The publishers have made numerous changes to format, style,
and content, and not one of them is for the better.

Format: The new edition has more clutter than ever in the margins.
Just about every page contains a distracting and usually irrelevant
sidebar, and color photographs (likewise irrelevant) push their way
into the text everywhere, as if the deisgners were trying to show off
their collection of pictures and their ability to flow text around
them. The actual text, when you can find it amid this clamoring
circus of marginal distractions, is marred by too-frequent changes in
background color and font size. It's difficult to read, and it's
difficult to orient oneself in the text, because the designers, while
splashing color and font changes all over the place, somehow managed
to make the chapter and section headings disappear. Just try to find
the beginning of Section 4-4. The decision to use a
proportional-space font in the tables of numbers on the Formulas and
Tables card suggests that the designer has never done any work with
tables of numbers.

Style: It's clear from the writing style that Dr. Triola is no longer
involved in the manufacture of the product that bears his name. (Or
else he had a very good copy editor in the earlier editions, who is
gone now.) A few paragraphs survive from the earlier editions, but
those that have been altered or inserted were written by someone
without the original author's grasp of English grammar. The new
author is also less careful about precise mathematical phrasing, and
is rather careless about things like referring to the probability of
an event that has already happened or the probability that a parameter
has a certain value. Many of the exercises now include a "tag-line"
question that is probably meant to help the students interpret the
results. A few of these questions are useful, but far more of them
require the student to speculate on or make judgments about subjects
with which he is almost certainly unfamiliar. In any case, they are
annoying, both to the student and to the instructor who must keep
repeating "Don't worry about that last part."

Content: How is it that later editions of the same book contain more
errors than earlier ones? Here are a few particularly nasty mistakes
that have been allowed into (or created for) the 11th edition:

Page 148, Exercise 9. "When rolling a single die at the Venetian
Casino in Las Vegas, there are 6 chances in 36 that the outcome is a
7." Does no one proofread these exercises? (Or does the Venetian
Casino really use 36-sided dice?)

Page 168, Exercise 17. The table supplied with the exercise is
missing its column headers. Again, this should have been caught by a
proofreader.

Page 433. There is an error in the presentation of the main formula
to be used in this section. And it's not just a slip-up in the
narrative text: The formula presented in the highlighted box is
incorrect. This is inexcusable. How could the proofreader have
missed it?

Page 484, Exercise 25. The exercise describes an observational study,
and concludes with the question "Should marijuana use be of concern to
college students?" The answer provided in the back of the book
suggests that the study shows a causal relationship between marijuana
use and impaired mental ability. This is in direct contradiction to
the rule that is so emphatically stated on pages 19 and 20: causality
may not be inferred from an observational study. The original author
would not have allowed such a blatant error to find its way into the
"officially correct" answers.

On the Formulas and Tables card -- the one that students use as a
reference when they're doing problems and taking exams -- the formula
for the chi-square test statistic is incorrect. How, then, are we to
trust anything else on this card? Where was the proofreader?

It does appear that Addison-Wesley, in the custom of the modern
producer of textbooks, rushed this edition through the mill, in order
to have all those overpriced copies on college bookstore shelves by
the beginning of the fall semester. In doing so, they apparently
omitted to have the book proofread or to give much thought to how
thoroughly the new design would discourage anyone from actually
reading it. Of course, it's possible that there's something even more
meretricious going on, and the publisher inserted the errors (all new
to the 11th edition) on purpose, so that the 11th edition could more
quickly be made obsolete, and replaced by an even more overpriced 12th
edition. I wouldn't put it past them.

Trash -- utter trash.

I am saddened to see the textbook community to mistake color, flash, graphics, and artifical examples as quality textbook. Although I understand they need to market, this book demonstrates the effect of marketing upon education.

My students complain that the text is difficult to read. Although I know they are new, I have to agree with their opinion. I sat and read the text -- and found it lacking respectable composition and clarity. I feel for my students and will not use the text again.

In addition, the examples are useless. They match the homework at the end of the chapter, but only "teach to the test". What's the point if the student don't learn methods on how to critically think and approach problems? Oh wow, they know what P(Z>1) is, but what do they know to do with it? Nothing!

Perhaps it is time for the educational community to produce their own compact books, customized to what students (and not publishers) need. I cannot recommend this book for anyone and would beg you to reconsider.

Pearson charged me $80 - and then took the book away - seriously!

I am using this book in a basic statistics course via MyMathLab. I purchased the book as part of MyMathLab, and I'm publishing my review here so that others will know. The online version of the text costs $80.00. That is by far the most expensive ebook I've ever purchased. According to Pearson (the people who produce MyMathLab) I am only able to access the book while online. There is no way to download it to my device. The other reviewers are absolutely correct - it contains an incredible about of material that has little or nothing to help students learn statistics. I can only use the ebook while I am registered for the course. Once that registration expires, I do not have access to the book ever again under any circumstances for the rest of my life. The $80.00 I paid for the ebook is gone, and so is the book, once the course is over. If I actually wanted to use the book in a real life situation after I complete the course (which I would never recommend), I'd have to buy the paper version at full price - which I won't do.

Since the book is part of MyMathLab, I can not copy or paste text, so there is no way to make notes of my own based on text in the book. Nor is there any way to highlight text, or add comments to the text. There is no way to save the text.

In addition to the errors mentioned by other reviewers, there are other very frustrating designs in the text. Most obvious is the complete lack of links. If the text says "see Appendix B", there is no link in the text to Appendix B. It might be 600 pages away, and it's up to the student to figure out how to find it. The table of contents can get someone to chapter headings, but it's not easy or intuitive.

There are a lot of other issues with the book and the ebook. For example, the page size can not change, so I can not set it to fit onto my screen. Many times when i scroll to the bottom of a page it bounces back up to the top. So I drag it back down. It bounces back up. This isn't funny, it's horrible design. I can go on and on and on with horrible design issues in the ebook, but you get the idea.

Bottom line - I'm supposed to be learning statistics with this system. It's not working. I'm going to simply Google the topics (such as "How to make a histogram") and learn that way, and/or get some other statistics book to learn from. This is education in spite of the text. The text itself in the ebook does not flow well, it is not easy to follow, and all of that makes it very difficult to learn statistics. All the animations and videos do NOT help nearly as much as they take away from learning the basic ideas and then practicing them. I like the goals of making the material relevant and practical, but those benefits are vastly outweighed by all the problems and issues.

Everyone already knows if you buy the paper version of the book that it is vastly overpriced, and if you get the ebook, now you know that it gets taken away when the course ends. To top it all, you'll need to use another book or method to learn statistics while you are in class if you really want to excel and master the subject. I would give this book negative stars if Amazon would allow it, it's really that awful. Recommendation: Avoid at all costs.

Alex Case is an Assistant Professor of Sound Recording Technology at the University of Massachusetts. An active member of the Audio Engineering Society, and a Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America, Case is an engineer, educator, and author who speaks frequently on audio and acoustics across the United States and internationally. With degrees in Mechanical Engineering, Music, and Acoustics, Professor Case lives and works at the intersection of art and science.

Unlocking the Creative Potential of Recording Studio Effects

Of the many audio engineering books I have encountered, Sound FX stands out in several distinct ways.

The Book is incredibly thorough and detailed. After covering the basic function of each studio effect, Sound FX goes on to describe many different uses that each effect can serve. For example at the end of the chapter on compression (page 163), nine different goals that compression can accomplish are listed. Over the course of the chapter, compression has been analyzed so thoroughly that you will understand how and to achieve each one of these nine desired effects and why and when you would want to.

Why would an engineer pick one compressor over another? There are several paragraphs outlining characteristics that change from model to model. Knowing what to listen for helped cue me on to some subtle differences that I had previously not heard. Sound FX is filled with details like this about every effect that mixing engineers use. Other studio effects are described just as carefully. (EQ, expansion, gating, reverb delay, pitch shifting, distortion, and so on)

Have you ever listened to a compressed track, and cranked the compressor's release time from as low as possible to as high as possible and not hear the difference? Sound FX explains what you need to listen for. Have you tried adjusting the "room size" on a reverb unit and not heard the difference? Again Sound FX explains what this means and what the sonic results are.

While engineers working on material that is not musical may find valuable information here, the book is primarily about working with music. A fair amount of technical information is presented, but the material always circles back to how the technology can be used to accomplish musical tasks.

It's taken me time to learn what effects are needed to to find the sound I want to hear. Understanding the complexity of what each effect has to offer and knowing what to listen for when I adjust parameters has drastically improved my mixes. The authors experience and meticulous attention to detail comes through here and analyzes the material more effectively than any other source I have encountered. After reading, I'm always left with a powerful urge to rush to the studio and put the material to use.

The Well Tempered Engineer

Sound FX is a comprehensive, beautifully laid out resource for all levels of recording engineers. Professor Case has found a way of re-examining the tried and true building blocks of music production that imparts new perspectives while covering fundamental topics. The book aims to empower engineers to understand the science behind the tools of the control room in order to inspire greater creativity within their recordings. Many of the described effects utilize tools found in most studios, but in a way that will be new to many of the readers, even those working in major recording studios. Musical references have been included so that the reader seek out discussed effects first hand.

Perhaps the greatest asset of Sound FX is the manner by which the material is presented; Alex Case has included a light hearted, witty narrative that makes the reading experience a breeze regardless of the material.

As is probably true of many audio people, I own several books covering various topics in recording but none that are as insightful and as inpiring as this one; highly recommended!

Excellent Resource

I've had the benefit of taking courses from the author prior to this book being published. As a result I know his teaching style. The author's style and voice comes through loud and clear in the text. It's enjoyable to read while you're learning some rather complex subjects.

Coming from a non engineering background I find the explanations of concepts clear and the graphics used to illustrate the concepts extremely helpful. This text will be useful for those wishing to learn more about the science behind the art.

If you want to know things like how to add a touch of reverb to make a voice pop through a music bed without having to simply lower the volume of the music; this book will show you how to do that and other production techniques in a way a non-techie will understand. It will also explain 'why' it works.

Having said that, this is not a "Sound Effects for Dummies" book either. This book goes in-depth. It will benefit those who have a technical/engineering background and are more "into the math" of sound and acoustics as well.

Access to the website with audio examples and the samples that are used to further illustrate the concepts is an invaluable resource that obviously took time to compile.

Investing the $39.95 for the knowledge "Sound FX" contains is a "no brainer" for anyone seriously interested in learning more about the science of sound and sound design.
