Review
“This new edition covers so much terrain of the urban scholarship that it is truly a very comprehensive and interdisciplinary reader for any course on cities and urban studies.”
—Xiangming Chen, Trinity College

“A rich and varied collection of important articles on cities. Selections range from older classic pieces to more recent insights, and the book provides a nice mix of European and American views of cities, whilst including writings about other areas of the world, especially China. Altogether this is an excellent and exciting collection of major writings.”
—Anthony M. Orum, University of Illinois

“The second edition of The Blackwell City Reader is even better than the first – and that was a milestone. The Reader covers the full spectrum of approaches to the city concisely but with real authority. As a result, it is a vital introduction to thinking about cities in a time when global problems and urban problems have become effectively interchangeable.”
—Nigel Thrift, University of Warwick

A good indicator book for further research

Overall, I like this anthology: my only problem is the fact that the essays are all excerpts from the original pieces, a fact that is not displayed prominently in the back-cover. Since anthologies can be made of excerpted materials, the editors and the publisher are in the right to not declare it so, but for a scholar, such a book can at best function as a sign that points towards interesting material and relevant articles. This is how I used the book: as a roadmap to the major theorists in the field (city and urban modernity) and then to go look for the full texts of the articles themselves. Of course, since I got the book for free, I didn't mind the detour... :)
As for the materials themselves, I think they are well-chosen and indeed, as the book says, the scope and sweep is international. Again, my only caveats are against the criteria for excerpting and I would have hoped to find in the anthology full texts of the original essays.

Bunch of Socialist Mumbo Jumbo

I wish I could punch my teacher for assigning this text for an English 114 (Critical thinking/argumentative writing class). The authors write in convoluted metaphors, and is really geared towards "liberalizing" our country's kids. I may use this book for target practice next time I go to the gun range.
