The gift of self reliance is the gift that keeps on giving

I bought this for my son because I believe the greatest gift we can give a child is self reliance. In the days of enabling this book is timely and will help infuse the independence that every child needs to survive. The basic concepts of self trust, self acceptance and embracing individuality. I love the fluidity of Emerson. He was already one of my favorites but this book really resonates with me and many levels. It is my mission to raise my son and daughter with these ideas that will sustain them when I'm gone. "Nothing will bring you peace but yourself" RWE

Every thought Emerson has is insightful and inspirational.

It is difficult to write a review that is worthy of the greatness of this book. Poetically written, each essay is uniquely beautiful. It astonishes me to read a book from so long ago that is still so relevant today. I wish I could go back and have conversations with Emerson and Thoreau. Imagine the conversations they had with each other! It took me a while to read this, but it was important to me to take my time and understand each point he was making. This is the kind of book that one should reference throughout life. Emerson reminds us to trust in our soul above everything and let its force shine through. Only then will our lives have meaning.

A guide on how one should live

I only read the essay "self reliance" and already think it's one of the most inspiring book I ever read. "Nothing can bring you peace but yourself. Nothing can bring you peace but the triumph of principles." Is the last sentence of the book and a good summary, the key ideas in this book resonance with many great works but explored in a different angle, like the Chinese proverb "大道歸一” - all great ways unites, it is a great book for gaining a better in the ultimate principal.
