Inferno: A Kydd Sea Adventure, Book 17 (Kydd Sea Adventures), by Julian Stockwin

Napoleon Bonaparte's ambitions for world domination are growing apace, when Captain Sir Thomas Kydd returns to take up command of his ship Tyger, he finds himself called to be part of a great armada on a mission of the utmost urgency. Britain is alone and isolated in Europe. If the kingdom is to thwart a deadly threat she must move very quickly to secure her position with neutral Denmark. A desperate decision is made by the Cabinet. It sends a sea force to the entrance to the Baltic and pressures the Crown Prince of Denmark to turn over the Danish fleet before it falls into the hands of Bonaparte. Unbeknownst to Kydd, his old friend, Renzi, has been called upon to undertake a parallel diplomatic mission to persuade the Danes to give up their fleet for the duration of the war. Renzi and Cecilia, Countess Farndon, are trapped in Copenhagen when everything comes to a terrible conclusion. In the meantime Kydd is lured ashore and captured by the French, but in a strange twist finds himself released to snatch the future king of France from exile. He returns to find a scene of chaos and terror. While attempting Renzi's rescue, Kydd is witness to the poignant sight, never to be forgotten, of the entire surrendered Danish fleet sailing out of Copenhagen harbor the ships slowly proceeding one by one.

"This heady adventure blends fact and fiction in rich, authoritative detail." —Nautical Magazine

"Historians will forget they're reading fiction while story-lovers won't mind that they're learning history." —Jason R. Musteen, Assistant Professor, United States Military Academy

Wonderful slice of history, not so much Kydd
By Charles F. Kartman
Mr. Stockwin is IMHO the finest living author of historical nautical fiction. His Kydd series began as a poor man's Aubrey/Maturin, and has retained much of that template. However, his primary characters have evolved a great deal, perhaps even more than their fine models, and Stockwin has delved deeper into little known episodes of the Napoleonic wars such as British adventures in South Africa, Argentina, and Turkey. His latest is more of the same, though less naval than we are used to and a bit disjointed. Still, a must read for Kydd fans.

What follows is a LARGE SPOILER, so please do not go on if you are unfamiliar with the history behind this book. In "Inferno", we read all about Denmark -- not Nelson's famous attack on the fleet in Copenhagen, but a second expedition to deny the Danish fleet to Bonaparte. That successful foray has largely disappeared from popular memory: the Danes lost their capital and their fleet, the French were denied a strategic asset that would have greatly aided their stranglehold on British trade, and the British accomplished their aims only by attacking a neutral and inflicting harm on its innocent citizens.

The focus of "Inferno" is oddly scattered. It begins with a treasure-hunting expedition in Scotland by Kydd and Toby Stirk that has absolutely no connection to the rest of the book but seems to be there because Mr. Stockwin was fascinated by a prototype of an early diving suit. The expedition against the Danes has some overlong descriptions of arguments in the British Cabinet presided over by the Duke of Portland, and also in the Danish Council of War. Since most of the campaign was on land, a brother of one of the Tygers is provided among the number of the light infantry. Finally, Renzi and Kydd's sister Cecilia, Lord and Lady Farndon, are on a diplomatic mission in the middle of the affray. Sir Thomas Kydd and the Tyger, on the other hand, have very little to do until a strange episode that is tacked onto the end of the book, a true event that actually involved a Swedish frigate, not a British one, but that is a small enough alteration for the need's of the story.

Highpoints of the book were the foray by Danish gunboats, and the occasional appearances by Sir Arthur Wellesley. Mr. Stockwin seemed to be rather uncomfortable with the decisions forced upon the British, and his sympathies are thus evenly divided between the British and the Danes. It is fascinating as history, but a bit less so as a chapter in the Kydd saga.

Sorry Mr.Stockwin
By daniel moore
I have thoroughly enjoyed every Kydd book I have read. While I enjoyed visiting with my friends in this story, I do not feel satisfied. This is an interesting historical moment, but I look forward to new entries in this series because I love historical NAVAL fiction. There was far too little in this book. Well written Mr. Stockwin, but please return to the sea when we next read about Sir Thomas.

Same characters; new situation s
By Kindle Customer
I love Kydd, Renzi, and their shooting characters. The stories became somewhat formulaic. The stage is set for a naval encounter, when Kydd's intelligence and character solve and insoluble tactical problem. This book takes the formula out of the navy, making for an interesting plot. It also contains morally ambiguity often missing from this sort of adventure novel. It introduces Ensign Maynard as an engaging and complex chsracter. I hope we see more of him in the future.
